Date Started

November 2016

Project Stage

  • Growth (have moved past the very first activities; working toward the next level of expansion)

Yearly Budget : What is your current yearly budget for the initiative?

  • €10k - €50k

Organization Type

  • For-profit

1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this project to succeed.

2017 AMGI entered a JV with an Ecuadorian company having granted mineral rights on 2 concessions in the Bella Rica mining district western Azuay province Ecuador with the objective to collaborate with COOPERATIVE BELLA RICA to implement our Green Gold Mining Action Plan to acquire/JV a Chilean mill, remediate convert to low-cost eco-friendly borax flux smelting until research revealed decades & the magnitude of the ongoing human health & biodiversity disaster from mercury (Hg) & cyanide (CN) pollution in Portovelo-Zaruma we decided Green Gold Mining Solutions implemented in Zaruma would reach a larger audience & the word would spread quickly to other mining districts that ASG miners can safely recover more Au sustainably & #MakeMoreMoney

2. The problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Hg-dependent Artisanal & small-scale gold mining is responsible for our Planets largest Anthropogenic source of Hg pollution a deadly neurotoxin which is poisoning your life & endangering unborn fetus for jewelry gold. Hg, banned in most Countries although a thriving global black market exists, is used every day by ~ 15 million poverty stricken ASG miners in 70 Countries impacting 100 million people globally to harvest Au to make 100 times more money daily instead of tending crops or fishing.

3. Your solution: How are you working to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We 1) initiated an organic social media campaign several years ago, Bruce our Team leader published several dozen articles and postings creating an ongoing awareness campaign, 2) published our White Paper and softly launched “Our Planet’s 1st #ClimateAction Cryptocurrency Blockchain Smart Futures Contract to #MakeMercuryHistory in Artisanal and small-scale gold mining” 1st round pre-Token Sales Event which we’ve not aggressively pursued nor received any funds, 3) sent a Three-Phase Green Gold Mining Action Plan Presentation and comprehensive letter to APROPLASMIN February 11th to JV/acquire remediate convert one of 87 Chilean processing centers along the Calera/Amarillo riverbanks which in 2015 released a total 1.9 million tonnes of toxic chemicals tailings sludge including 2,033 tonnes of cyanide, 222 kg of Hg plus other heavy metals polluting the rivers through Peru to the Gulf of Guayaquil then Pacific Ocean to promote eco-friendly low-cost borax flux smelting to showcase 5 times more Au recovery safely and sustainably, 4) submitted “Unite with Chemistry – Use Borax as a flux to #MakeMercuryHistory in ASGM” application to the Artisanal Grand Challenge March 2, 2020.

4. Innovation: How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solve the problem?

With the remediation & conversion of one of the 87 Portovelo-Zaruma Chilean processing centers to borax flux smelting by retrofitting the Chilean mills with shaking tables, the Chanchas with sluicing trays with soap followed by oxidation of the ore after panning prior to borax flux smelting will eliminate any heavy metal discharge and ASG miners will recover more Au sustainably & mitigate “the H2O quality measurements for heavy metals taken at the processing plants were extremely high & downstream the concentrations of Pb were 16 times higher than at the river's source” & “residents showed unsettling signs of neurobehavioral problems related to fine motor skills, attention span, & memory”.

5. Collaboration: How does your initiative seek to bring key players together to preserve biodiversity?

Portovelo-Zaruma stakeholders begin with a global community, 42,000 residents, 65 APROPLASMIN (Asociación de Propietarios de Plantas de Beneficio Mineral) members, 10,000 local ASG miners & thousands of miners that transport their ore here for processing. We contacted APROPLASMIN with a comprehensive presentation to initiate discussions to acquire/JV a Chilean processing center, in communication with Dr. Peter W. U. Appel, Ph.D., Scientist pioneer of borax flux smelting, initiated contact with Artisanal Gold Council (AGC) Dr. Kevin Telmer, Executive Director for financing, ARM (ALLIANCE FOR RESPONSIBLE MINING) Géraud Brunel, New Initiatives, Partnerships & Innovation, Dr. Marcello M. Veiga expert & Chief Technical Advisor of the GEF/UNDP/UNIDO Global Mercury Project for UNIDO and need to contact Ecuador Environment & Mining Ministries & International Development Research Centre (IDRC), collaborate with NB Keevil engineering experts on design remediation & numerous others.

6. Impact: how has your project made a difference so far — in terms of both business outputs and social impact? How do you plan on measuring progress?

Peter W.U. Appel, Ph.D., with whom I am in contact & his associate Leoncio D. Na-Oy who provides borax training published numerous Scientific papers, produced an educational video & instruction/training document demonstrating the Borax process along with publications are the pioneers in the Philippines. MT. BAKER MINING AND METALS recently demonstrated borax smelting in Sudan updating the process with the addition of a shaking table which improved the borax process still widely unknown to ~15 million miners in 70 Countries using Hg & cyanide daily. Recently I contacted APROPLASMIN to remediate & convert a members Chilean processing center to borax & retrofit a shaking table for gravitational separation adding a milled ore soap & oxidation process & demonstrate to the largest audience ever with the success being measured by the reduction in Hg use. The past two years my combined 8,000+ Twitter & LinkedIn followers receive our message to #MakeMercuryHistory in Zaruma, Ecuador.

7. Growth strategies: what are your main strategies for scaling your impact?

Portovelo-Zaruma mining district 65 APROPLASMIN members owning ~ 104 Chilean processing centers of which 87 are currently operating processing 10,000 local ASG miner’s ore with most ore & tailings processed transported from the western Azuay province having ~ 40,000 ASG miners. Our Team strategy to implement Green Gold Mining in Zaruma to #MakeMercuryHistory requires collaboration material & ground support & money to acquire/JV a Chilean processing center which typically operates 6 Chilean Hg amalgamation mills & 2 whole ore Hg amalgamation Chanchas/center remediate convert & demonstrate borax smelting evidencing 3 – 5 times more Au recovered safely sustainably with no toxic tailings & extend this offer to all members to make more money

8. Creating shared value: How does your initiative create value for society? Or different stakeholders?

Our Team as stakeholders in our biosphere will have created shared value for all biosphere stakeholders once one ASG miner or one APROPLASMIN member converts to soap sluicing milled ore oxidation & borax smelting eliminating 1) their use of deadly neurotoxin Hg & toxic cyanide, 2) discharge of toxic heavy metal tailings sludge, 3) production of toxic mercuric cyanide & other Hg-cyanide compounds providing global mobility for Hg, & 4) microbial production of deadly neurotoxin Methylmercury of unknown biomagnification also threatening our environment & health security while providing greater income for the miners sustainably resolving community APROPLASMIN members & miners biodiversity issues

9. Financial sustainability plan: can you tell us about your plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

Gonçalves et al., (2017) estimated the ASGM sector in Portovelo-Zaruma alone (10,000 ASG miners) produced 7 to 8 tonnes of Au in 2015. Reportedly each APROPLASMIN Chilean processing facility processes ~1,860 tonnes of ore/month recovering 5.7 Kg Au/month ( $USD 285,000) with an average operating cost ~ $USD 84,000/month plus unknow revenues from miners renting equipment & CIP (Carbon In Leach) processing tanks and left over tailings containing up to 30 gms/ton Au vs. typically 1.5 gms/ton of ore. Once monies are received through grants, challenges, equity or our Initial Coin Offering to acquire a facility & evidence up to 5 times more Au recovered sustainably, our project will be self-funding to acquire or JV additional facilities.

10. Team: what is the current composition of your current team (types of roles, qualifications, full-time vs. part-time, board members, etc.), and how do you plan to evolve the team’s composition as the project grows?

I, a Scientist, Chemist environmentalist & entrepreneur along with Alexandra an entrepreneur & financial professional have assembled a Team including Canadian Daniel Rubiolo, Ph.D., P. Geologists, Ecuadorians Franklin H. C. Cevallos B.Sc., P. Mining Engineer & Oscar Rios B.Sc., P. Geologist. We are communicating with Dr. Peter W. U. Appel, Ph.D., pioneer of borax flux smelting & will be engaging his associate Leoncio D. Na-Oy who provides borax training & Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining.
