EDUCATION PROVISION ON CROP PROTECTION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VECTORS OF POLLINATION IN AGRICULTURE

1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this project to succeed.
We are group of youth who joined together four years ago, after we graduated from different universities. Our Aha moment started when we graduated and faced a challenge of employment. We saw an opportunity in Agriculture activities specific Horticultural production. We decided to practice professional horticultural production. When we started our horticultural production we faced a serious problem of POLLINATION due to lack of insects who act as pollinators. This problem was caused by use of insecticide(s) which are not friendly to the insects and other pollinator vectors. On top of that the problem of crop protection to small holders farmers also it is the reason why we started educate them.
2. The problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
The problem of pollination to horticultural production in Tanzania it is increasing day to day. We have come up with the program of providing education to small holders farmers in Tanzania on the important of maintaining vectors of pollination like bees and butterfly. We are providing education on good agricultural practices on this matter and crop protection for the benefit of the final consumers who are human beings. Try to imagine a world without insects,that means we will disturb ecosystem
3. Your solution: How are you working to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We have came up with a programme of providing education to small holders farmers all over Tanzania, as well as we are providing this education to students from primary school and secondary school on this matter.
1. Education to small holders farmers
In this area we have based much to small holders farmers simply because many of them lack formal education, therefore some of the things they are doing it basing on hearsay. We have a special program where we are organizing a group of small holders farmers from different villages and we give them a proper education on the importance vectors of pollination like bees and butterfly and how they can protect this species. Because of this we highly teach them on good agricultural practices especially on crop protection for the betterment of the final consumers who are human beings. We have also managed to reach many farmers though interviews with different media in Tanzania.
2. Education to the student
We saw this as an opportunity and we come up with the program known as "TEACH A CHILD SO HE CAN TEACH HIS PARENTS" we come with this program simply because we thought it will be shame for a child to teach his parent.
4. Innovation: How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solve the problem?
We came up with different approach like:-
1. Students competition on crop protection and pollinators maintenance
We come up with the approach of student to compete on drawing pictures which explain the importance of preserving pollinators as well as good agricultural practices. Also we have come up with tour to national parks competition, where we train students on good agricultural practices especially on crop protection and the importance of pollinators then at the end divide them on groups and we assign them to prepare some thing which resemble of what we taught then the winners will be rewarded a tour to national parks.
2. Media tour
We come up with approach in order to reach many people because media like radio reach many people.
5. Collaboration: How does your initiative seek to bring key players together to preserve biodiversity?
We have collaborated with some governmental institution like Kihinga Folk Development College where by we are using that center as our center of education provision to farmers who are from western zone of Tanzania.
we are collaborating with Extension officers from different wards in Tanzania and we train them on issues of crop protection then they teach farmers in their ward and villages. This method has helped us to reach many farmers.
6. Impact: how has your project made a difference so far — in terms of both business outputs and social impact? How do you plan on measuring progress?
Up to December 2019 we have managed to reach a total number of 10000 students from different schools in Tanzania, and we have managed to reach 1200 small holders farmers in Tanzania, where we taught them on the issue of crop protection and the issue of maintaining pollinators for the betterment of our agricultural activities.
Basing on what we are doing we have managed to received Awards and certificate of appreciation. we are award winner of Small scale farm of the year 2019, this is a great awards where every farmer admire this awards. We received a certificate of appreciation from Counseling and Family Life Organization, this was due to the education which we are providing to the society especially to vulnerable groups on the importance of crop protection and the importance of pollinators.
We have managed to received 1100 phones from different small holders farmers who hear us via radios when we taught them on crop protection and the important of pollinators.
7. Growth strategies: what are your main strategies for scaling your impact?
We are planning to start a radio which will be broadcasting on the issue of good agricultural practices and will provide a platform for any farmer to ask any question which he think will help in his farming activities.
Apart from that we are thinking of increase the number of training to smalls holders farmers and students from different schools. We have seen the positive impacts of training hence we want to modify and reach as much as we can reach them. Also we have talked to some government officials on the issue of coming with a policy which will lead the government official to provide as many training as they can starting from the level of street,village,wards,district,region as well as nation.
8. Creating shared value: How does your initiative create value for society? Or different stakeholders?
We have come up with the approach of sports competition methods, where by we conduct different sport competition among primary and secondary students. In doing so we provide education about crop protection and the important of pollination as well as the importance of planting fruits and herbs trees in their home premises, we go further by providing free fruits and herbs tree to the students. For stance in 2019 we managed to distributed 850 free fruits and herbs trees.
This year we have plan to reach many small holders farmers and teach them on the issue of crop protection and the importance of pollinators. This time each farmer will be assign to teach other two farmers and more.
9. Financial sustainability plan: can you tell us about your plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?
The project it is run by the income which we get from farming activities after selling the products from our farm.
Also we are generating income from construction of greenhouse and installation of drip irrigation system to some of the farmers who visited our farm and see the irrigation system hence they give us tender to install to their farms.
We are looking forward to introduce a processing industry of what we farm so that we can add value to our products.
We are looking forward for other stakeholders like Ashoka who can fund our project for the sustainability.

the current composition of our team are as follows; Board of Directors (Four Board members), Management team, Commercial/procurement team, project management team, administration./finance office, planning/design office and Projects operations
11. How did you hear about this challenge?
