1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this project to succeed.

We met in 2018 during youth agripreneur Incubation at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Tanzania. The decision to work together came automatically after all having passionate of protecting living organisms from destruction caused by environment pollution. It’s our passion and pleasure to see a clean & safe environment that is supportive to living organisms.

2. The problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Chemical pesticides contributes up 60% loss of biodiversity, destruction of water sources and environment. Also Pesticide kills an average of 200,000 people per year , 99% are people from developing world ( UN report 2018). Poor farming methods of using conventional pesticides makes the problem to flourish. The only measure is to shift from conventional pesticides to Integrated pests management. We are producing bio-pesticide protecting biodiversity and environment for future generations.

3. Your solution: How are you working to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Technology of manufacturing Bio-pesticide from organic wastes including neem plant, cassava peels, animal byproduct and pepper used by farmers to control pest hence increase their yields without affecting biodiversity and environment. The product is composed of safe active ingredients like azadiracthin, nimbidicine, piperine, cyanide and nitrogen. It controls pests like fall army worms, locus, caterpillar, mealy bugs, fall armyworms, fungus, white flies, worms and aphid. Product recommendations are; one litre of bio-pesticide mixed with 10 litres of water and should be sprayed in the morning or evening twice a week until crop /fruit harvest.

4. Innovation: How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solve the problem?

 Low cost of the materials used like cassava peels and animal urine makes our product affordable.  Using pure organic raw materials like cassava peels neem and animal urine in manufacturing process makes our product safe and ensures good health of farmers and food consumers.  In general our bio-pesticide is 100% effective in controlling chronic pests like fall army worms, locusts without affecting human health and environment.

5. Collaboration: How does your initiative seek to bring key players together to preserve biodiversity?

We are working with small holder farmers from different areas of Tanzania training them on the benefits of using Integrated pest management over conventional pest management. Also working with the ministry of agriculture supporting us financially and technically ensuring we are producing enough bio-pesticide distributing it to small holder farmers at reasonably price that attracts them to shift from convention pest management to Integrated pest management.

6. Impact: how has your project made a difference so far — in terms of both business outputs and social impact? How do you plan on measuring progress?

 Protect loss of bio-diversity and water sources by 20%.  Reduce green house gases such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide by 15%.  Increase good health & safety to food consumers, farmers and their off spring by 20%.  Cut the cost of pesticide illness treatment to farmers enabling them to save money hence increasing the ability to cover family expenses such as fees, hospitals cost, food, clothes, house rent.  Increase crop production and decrease hunger by 10%.  Decrease poverty among farmers.  Increase Growth Domestic Product by 3% since agriculture sector employs 70% of Tanzanian Population.

7. Growth strategies: what are your main strategies for scaling your impact?

Training more number of small holder farmers making them to shift from convention pest management to integrated pest management. Currently we have trained more than 50,000 and still continues as we are planning to train 5 million from Tanzania and other 10 million from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. When all these farmers acquire our training automatically become our customers.

8. Creating shared value: How does your initiative create value for society? Or different stakeholders?

 Create jobs both professional and non Professional (Industrial workers)  Increase good health & safety to food consumers, farmers and their off spring by 20%.  Cut the cost of pesticide illness treatment to farmers enabling them to save money hence increasing the ability to cover family expenses such as fees, hospitals cost, food, clothes, house rent.  Decrease poverty among farmers.  Increase Growth Domestic Product by 3% since agriculture sector employs 70% of Tanzanian Population.  Increase crop production and decrease hunger by 20%.

9. Financial sustainability plan: can you tell us about your plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

We charge $ 5 for each litre of bio-pesticide last year we sold 20, 000 litres making a total revenue of $100, 0000 per year. This year we plan to increase our production from 20,000 litres to 45,000 litres making revenue of $225,000 per year.

10. Team: what is the current composition of your current team (types of roles, qualifications, full-time vs. part-time, board members, etc.), and how do you plan to evolve the team’s composition as the project grows?

Edmond Ng’walago is a founder. Having 5 years of experience in Agribusiness worked. Mentored and worked at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Hokelai Kaniki is a Co-founder. He has 4 years of experience in agribusiness obtained from IITA. Jeruphine Ponsiana is an operation manager. She has 3 years of experience in integrated pesticide management from Sustainable Agriculture. Dr. Nteranya Saginga is the business adviser. He is the General Director of IITA.
