1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this project to succeed.

The Lura NP has suffered a havy damage during the transition period and is facing the following problems: • Habitat loss and fragmentation; • Damage and degradation of habitats and ecosystems;

2. The problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The project specific objectives are to rescue and restore selected critically endangered endemic plants as: Macedonian pine(Pinus peuche), Bosnian pine (P. heldreichii), Pseudocork oak (Quercus crenata or Q. pseudosuber).

3. Your solution: How are you working to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

1. Eco-geographic survey of Lura NP and its buffer zone to identify rare species status and select those endangered to extinction. 2. Restoration of Lura NP rare endangered species: P. heldreichi, P. peuche, Q. Crenata, through “in-situ” cultivation and conservation; 3. Seeding and planting in an “in-situ“ selected area for their seedling cultivation (within Lura NP and buffer zone...in 0.5 ha + 2 ha ) in close collaboration with local community, 3. Field work of re-plating “in-situ” cultivated (5000) trees on the selected sites (2 ha): out of 1380 ha;

4. Innovation: How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solve the problem?

1. Eco-geographic survey of species identification (5 species threatened selected. 2. Restoration-replenishment of endangered rare species in Lura NP: P. heldreichi, P. peuche, Q. Crenata, through in situ cultivation and conservation; 3. Planting of (5000) seedlings of (3) endangered species and their planting on the surface of natural areas, “in-situ “cultivation of seedlings (2 ha, site near Lura ... November-December .

5. Collaboration: How does your initiative seek to bring key players together to preserve biodiversity?

The Biodiversity Conservation within NP-Lura and its buffer zone will have a support of the Lura Community(consisting of 12 villages and approximately 5000 inhabitants) in preventing further damages to KP-Lure, and forests in the buffer zone, and rehabilitating forest biodiversity, rare species of war and more for preserving glacial lakes, (14 other glacial lakes) total water par 30 ha set at 1350-1720 m above sea level) which may be a rare case in the coexistences of South-Eastern Europe and to seek more for better use to provide natural resources in general to the Lura region, spread in three districts (Debra, Mati, Mirdita).

6. Impact: how has your project made a difference so far — in terms of both business outputs and social impact? How do you plan on measuring progress?

1. Eco-geographic survey of Lura NP and its buffer zone to identify rare species status and select those endangered to extinction. 2. Restoration of Lura NP rare endangered species: P. heldreichi, P. peuche, Q. Crenata, through “in-situ” cultivation and conservation; 3. Seeding and planting in an “in-situ“ selected area for their seedling cultivation (within Lura NP and buffer zone...in 0.5 ha + 2 ha ) in close collaboration with local community, 3. Field work of re-plating “in-situ” cultivated (5000) trees on the selected sites (2 ha): out of 1380 ha; 4) Field survey by studying of genetic variation among its population and maintenance; c) Follow-up, translations, consultations, training seminars,etc;

7. Growth strategies: what are your main strategies for scaling your impact?

ALBAFOREST will have a close collaboration with the two research institutes for nature and forest conservation, respectively the Faculty of Nature Sciences (UT) and the Faculty of Forestry (AUT), and botanists and researchers of these institutions have previously agreed become members of the project implementation team. For the implementation of this project, and for the conservation and continuation of the demonstration area, collaboration has been established with the RPAA (Regional Protected Areas Agency) and the local community to further conserve the demonstration area and biodiversity of Lura NP. RPAA in collaboration with the local community of Lura will organize the demonstration area work and undertake its conservation and extensio

8. Creating shared value: How does your initiative create value for society? Or different stakeholders?

The population of the Lura Community will benefit from the improved environmental quality of Lura NP, and through a more sustainable use of sorrounding forests and pastues and restorating or re-establishing potential touristic values and new income diversification opportunities and reverse the further natural resources deterioration.

9. Financial sustainability plan: can you tell us about your plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

The main goals and program of ALBAFOREST is promotion of sustainable natural resources management, developing studies and ecological education, undertaking of the common actions for sustainable natural resources management and environmental education, develop forest and forest ecosystem assessment, promotion of preservation and rehabilitation of rare and threatened biodiversity species, and mountain watersheds management and provision of relevant trainings through SNR management. This project’s outcomes will serve as an example for undertakings further and wider actions to restore and conserve the globally endangered plant species of the country.
