Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

ESA is currently deeply involved in an initiative called P3SD, which focuses on transforming the landscape of early education in San Diego County from prenatal (P) to 3rd grade (3). The importance of quality early education in a child's life is undeniable, yet a consistent, funded, and well directed system does not currently exist in our county. ESA brings together great minds to helps catalyze discussion and change for early education policy.

When a community supports early education on all levels, children are awarded the opportunity for a life of thriving, not simply surviving. When community thought leaders gather together to engage with and work alongside Education Synergy Alliance, they become part of a movement toward a community where every child has equal access to a bright and promising future. Through our work, we hope to reach a place where 75% of children are reading and doing math at grade level by 3rd grade, and the achievement gap between gap between White/Asian students and Latino/Black students is reduced by 50%.

Impact: What was the impact of your work last year? Please also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Since the launch of the P3SD initiative ESA has expanded our collaborative from 25 members to 250. In 2016 Education Synergy Alliance and our advocacy team submitted a budget request to the local government calling for significant changes in the funding and structure of early childhood education policy. Although we did not see 100% of the results we requested, significant steps were made and ____ of our request was granted. As we continue to gather key stakeholders of all areas in our community, Education Synergy Alliance hopes to see more successes such as this with the ultimate goal of long lasting significant change for education.

Unique Value Proposition: How else is this problem being addressed? Are there other organizations working in the same field, and how does your project differ from these other approaches?

No other entity or organization is providing leadership on early education in San Diego at this time. There are many other organizations such as the First Five Commission, the San Diego County Office of Education, and United Way San Diego that work for and support education but do not provide thought leadership or offer a broad coalition for change. ESA provides a unifying conversation between all entities invested in education in our community to rally together and promote action in a space where such a unifying player does not exist.
