Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Farmers perceived debt, addiction, environmental problems, poor prices for farm produce, stress and family responsibilities, government apathy, poor irrigation, increased cost of cultivation, private money lenders, use of chemical fertilizers and crop failure are the reasons for farmers’ suicides

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Price discovery - Besides undertaking irrigation works and horticulture programmes, the key issues are farm products marketing and access to markets at a remunerative price.
AGVSS has got the farmers together under the Farmer Producer Organizations, self-help group or a co-operative.
AGVSS has initiated the steps to bring the corporate sector, but with a rider. The organized retail should offer innovative engagement with the farmer, harnessing the existing supply chain.
New warehousing and cold storage facilities, to be set up by organised retail, will throw up employment opportunities in the countryside even as changes occur in the farm products supply-chain.
Corporate partners - In a scenario where the FPOs, FSHG/co-operative and the corporate partner are collaborating, the farmer is expected to save substantially on the transaction costs.
It will be a win-win situation for all the stakeholders and especially for the small farmers who will work as a collective/company.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

Qualitative
• Farmers adopted innovative farming techniques and technology
• Decrease in farmers suicides
• Activities of drainage line treatment, farm bunds, BBF etc implemented
• Increase in HH income through diversified livelihoods
• Empowerment of women through micro credit enterprises

Quantitative
• Project implemented in 10 villages
• Total 1500 farmers benefited
• Capacities of farmers from 10 villages built on SAP
• Beneficial schemes from line depts. Converged in project villages
• Total 2 FPOs have been formed and strengthened
• The project covers total 10 villages as its beneficiaries
AGVSS is roping in big corporate to bring in modern technologies like harvester, zero tillage machines and also will address the issue of climate resilient crops. AGVSS is also going to introduce allied services like Goatery on a commercial scale so as to bring more economic benefits to the targeted beneficiary who are small farm holders.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

These initiatives were supported by State and National Goverment schemes. These were also supported by corporate under CSR.
The community members and CBOs shall ensure that the assets created under the project especially relating to NRM are maintained through taxes, contribution and donations/ grants from donor agencies /government to accord sustainability to the project interventions.
However, the main sustainability will come from the supply chain and the business of aggregation and creating backward and forward linkages in terms of getting the right price. Introduction of allied services like Goatery and Poultry will also enhance the Incomes of the small farmers. AGVSS will create an information platform whereby daily prices of commodities, details of traders/buyers will be shared.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

AGVSS will form more FPOs and federate them as cooperatives with systems and processes. AGVSS will handhold and build capacities of running a business profitably so that the entire operations are run by the shareholders who are small farmers.
AGVSS will create a Farmer Service Center-Training, Inputs, Farm equipment, Market linkage, Micro-Finance, linkages with corporate and government line departments.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

The founder member of the organization and the Board members came from the poor villages of Vidharbha and they themselves were involved in farming traditionally. They have seen the drudgery of small and marginal farmers and the suicides due to various reasons. They have seen women and the family members unable to provide the basic education, health and even houses to their families.

The Founder came from similar circumstances and could not complete his higher education due to small sum of money as his father was a farmer. He through his sheer guts and endurance became a civil engineer with the government but left his job after a year after seeing farmers facing huge problems due to drought. This triggered him to work for his own people.
