Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

We are in a negative circle of a drastically increasing number of plastic waste, low economic resources for local villagers and decreasing quality of water and nutrition.
Plastic and no access to clean water is a big problem in Bali. Due to a bad sewer system and plastic ending up in rivers, water streams, oceans, rice fields and local agriculture, the quality of clean water and clean nutrition recourses is in serious danger.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

A village where every family has a water filter, every member owns a stainless steel bottle, where there is a well functioning waste management system in place including compost and recycling and where the local villagers benefit through job opportunities in these areas.

We would implement a healthy way of living, awareness about the impact and importance of drinking clean water and eating healthy nutrition. In addition we aim to increase the knowledge about plastic waste and recycling.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

When every member of the community has their own water filter and stainless steel bottles, it will reduce the use of plastic bottles by almost 100%.
Currently, the village of 179 families with a total of 793 inhabitants is using an average of 50.000 water bottles per month. If all these members of the community would use the water filters and stainless steel bottles, there would be no use of plastic bottles in the village.

As Bali is living a community-based life, the social impact will be as a snowball effect where behavior and knowledge is transferred and affected in their own social environment. If your neighbor doesn’t use plastic, why would you?
This effect will even be bigger to other communities and villages as well.

As VP Bali is constantly active in the community, and our team members are located in the village itself, there is total integration of this project by constant support, development and skill training.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

The cost of one water filter is approximately $20 per filter, each filter can contain 10 litres of water. The cost of one stainless steel bottle, custom made with VP Bali logo is approximately $10 per bottle.
We would aim for local employment of a total of 22 villagers who we can hire for 5 years. These people would be a sustainable team where we would train local village leaders about awareness about clean water access, recycling, waste management and organic farming and have people working on regular clean ups. The average salary in Indonesia IDR 2,00,000 per month which is approximately $150 per month. For 22 people for a period of 5 years this would be approximately $200,000.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

Our solution will on the long term have impact on a large number of the Balinese population. There are many other organizations in Bali taking care of the environment but they are more focused on one specific area, for example waste management or recycling. Our solution however would look at the greater picture where we grow with the community towards covering all aspects in the areas of clean water access and healthy nutrition.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

After running VP Bali for five years, and being successful in working together with the local community, I feel there is more to do. Living in the local village itself and being adopted by a Balinese family, I get to see first hand the issues people are dealing with. The lack of recourses, the increasing plastic problem in the village, the need for education and awareness about issues such as clean water access, waste management and self sufficiency, got me here.As I know in Bali it is very hard to achieve something together with the community. As I live and work closely in the community, I thought it is best to ask them how they would see the future and what innovative ideas they have. The first thing that came up was ‘stop using plastic bottles for drinking water!’. Unfortunately the community is not able to come up with recourses to achieve this, and that is how this solution started.
