Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

In Kenya there are an estimated 600,000 deaf students of which 30% do not attend school for these reasons. The problem they face is getting the students to the school to learn it. Between 1950 and 1980, 23 schools for the deaf were built all around Kenya. Educating every deaf student is pertinent to maintaining equality. In rural areas deaf children have no way of communicating with those around them making life extremely difficult to enjoy.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Build a dormitory near a school for the deaf in central Kenya. The dorm will house 26 boys and 26 girls with a staff to cook, clean and maintain. It will be 4 single story buildings, one for the boys, one for the girls, a food hall and a small place for the staff. There will be electricity and clean water. Agriculture is the main source of income in central Kenya making it very sustainable through farming collaboration. Funding the building of the compound will be the biggest challenge. The challenge is to give deaf students an opportunity to live clean, supportive and enriched lives. Education is important, more importantly having a clean home with bathrooms, clean water and the ability to learn. This would put at least 52 more students in school to learn, grow and become leaders. This housing facility will be an educational and safe place to learn and live.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

To date, the school itself has housed a few orphans to try and keep students in school and participatory. So far, they have enjoyed a better lifestyle and have done well compared to the others that have to go home. We know when given they opportunity students will perform better if they can focus on school and less on getting the basic needs of life like food, water and food. We have supported the educational aspect of the school for the deaf by providing computers for the students to learn sign language through video programs. This has allowed the school to create a whole new class that students can learn parallel to their current curriculum. This class room has ten computers that 2 students share as they learn collaboratively watching these instructional videos. Meanwhile, next door another class is being instructed by a teacher. In consequence, 20 extra students are now allowed to learn what they need to know to not only develop, but to survive.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

This will be financed through individual donations and corporate contributions. Once built, sustainability will be low cost. Costs would include electricity and water, which are relatively low for the region, and salary for the house keepers.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

Opportunities for deaf students are almost non-existent for the region.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

We were visiting Kenya in the summer of 2016 and sought out a new school to support for our computer donation initiative. We had heard about Kambui school for the hearing impaired, but had never visited it before. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the great staff and amazing students. After we had setup the computers we saw that the amount of determination and leadership amongst the students was incredible. Their camaraderie to problem solve was inspiring, more so than we saw anywhere else. They have a passion to succeed and a drive to be leaders. Our moment was to create an opportunity for everyone to be able to do the same.
