Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

The initiative is closing gap in accessibility to quality pork products by Ugandans.
Uganda is the best consumer of pork in East Africa with per capita consumption of more than 3.4kg/Person/Year and only next to South Africa in Africa (FAOSTAT, 2010). With smallholding capacity of production, 3.2 Million pigs owned by 1.1 Million households (National Livestock Census Report 2008), access to quality and quantity pork products is very limited.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

PPM support pig farmers to produce quality pigs desired by a premium market and planning sustainable farm growth. This is achieved through carrying out training, linking producers to input providers and providing a stable market.

Through a check-off system, registered producers with limited resources are able to access necessary inputs though at a slightly higher price. The cost of such inputs is then deducted (Checked-off from total amount) during payment for supplied pigs and remitted to the input provider. This increase the efficiency and effectiveness of pig production even when the situation is too hard for farmers to produce.

PPM is then able to access both quality and quantity of pigs for its pork needs. Some pork is sold to city hotels and restaurants and the rest through our mobile pork joint. PPM intends to increase quantity & types of pork products sold on scale.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

The company has trained 3000 pig farmers including women and youth in commercial pig farming since its establishment and out of these, 200 pig farmers are registered as partner farmers benefiting from the check off system and other special services. Through the training, pig farmers in northern Uganda have been empowered to establish a cooperative to increase access to inputs, stock bulking for market and government support. The manure from pigs is used to fertilize soils for increased crop yields hence reducing food insecurity & malnutrition. There has been increase in farm profitability caused by reduced costs of production and increased quality of pigs produced.

A medium-scale abattoir has been established and is where pigs are prepared into pork. Over 35,000 heads of pigs have so far been bought from farmers in the last 5 years.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

The company's daily production of pork has grown from 200Kg to a minimum of 500Kg per day through reinvestment of income earned. We as well partner with development organizations to subsidize fees for training & advisory services offered to farmers until a stage their earnings can enable them pay for the services. Therefore the highest percentage of our annual budget is covered by earned incomes at about 70% followed by partnerships/grants 30%.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

Our pork products are traceable back to the producer & pigs inspected from production to slaughter.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

I embarked on rearing pigs in 2009, I was faced with a number of challenges but most of all was the limited access to extension services and identification of genuine input providers. This led me to production of low quality pigs therefore limiting me to access a premium market with better margins. Together with a friend, we established Pig Production and Marketing Uganda Limited in 2012 to provide solution to above challenges not only to ourselves but also the community of pig farmers surrounding us.
