Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Our work is urgently needed as the Lower Mekong Delta is confronted with a dramatic rise in environmental degradation posed by Mekong mainstream dams, coal-fired power plants, chemical waste runoff, soil erosion, sand mining, salt water intrusion and other climate hazards, with devastating humanitarian, social and economic costs.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

We seek to mobilize political leaders to heed early warnings and take early action to avoid looming dangers. We seek to build creative and flexible frameworks for the involvement of various society groups such as local experts and activists, bloggers, youth, and farmers and provide concrete and up-to-date information for social media across the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

On December 11 we intend to conduct our second 2-day workshop with the following objectives:

i) Identify and train young activists and professionals who have passion for research work and reporting related to natural conservation and climate change adaptation.

ii) Identify and examine feasible and effective climate resilient production models to introduce and popularize among communities. Success stories will shed light on how think tanks, researchers and farmers could make collaborative action to further refine, or develop new economic paradigms in coping with the changing environment context.

iii) Develop and strengthen community capacity by networking and promoting mutual learning among workshop participants who are researchers, local officials, community representatives, and young professionals.

Our first workshop, attended by 40 individuals, achieved the above goals.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Individual donations (10%)
Grants (40%)
Corporate contributions (50%)
We intend to continue using roughly the same percentages in funding, though may consider a small fee on participants as the forum grows.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

Unique collaboration among the university, government leaders, scientists, farmers and the community

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

There really was no "Aha!" moment - environmental degradation in the Mekong Delta has been going on since the Vietnam War.
