Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Elles C Nous welcomes on a daily basis between 35 up to 80 children from underprivileged background at its premises. It was observed that most only take a meal per day or in most cases, these meals are far from being balanced due to the inability of many parents to provide health and nutritious meals to their children. A project that not only provides for but also teaches the children how to eat and cook in a healthy way was therefore launched.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

As the saying goes: "Give a man a fish and he shall eat for a day but teach him how to fish and he shall feed himself for his entire life". Our decision to launch healthy culinary and nutrition classes was fueled by our desire to not just feed children but to teach them how to make the most out of nothing much. By empowering them through cooking classes backed up by regular trainings on nutrition, our young beneficiaries are being taught the values of eating healthy, of sharing with one another and the importance of food hygiene and kitchen rules and precautions at at early age.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

We have carried out medical check-ups which have shown that more than 90% of the beneficiaries showed signs of better health following the implementation of the project. One of the most interesting aspect of the project is that we observed a changed at community level since the children would go home to their parents and share the values they had learned and lived through the project. A positive change in the sense of responsibility of parents was noticed and about 50 families changed their approach to eating healthy whilst respecting their budget.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

About 70% of our budget comes from grants and corporate financial support. We also receive regular donations on the part of individual benefactors. Our project is also supported through monthly food donations offered by the community, the families who are concerned and individuals. To sustain the project, we have made sure that the community understands that their implication is necessary and therefore they need to be contributors themselves.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

It brings together the community through its youngest members and creates change at root.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Our story is one of survival. To know that some children do not eat a thing from dusk to dawn was shocking to us and we felt that action was essential. We therefore decided to engage the community in a discussion around the importance of nutrition and good health as well as a fun activity that would bring together the family and tighten its bonds. When we realised how much interest the children took in helping out in the kitchen, we understood that this was an opportunity for them to feel valued, helpful and also to explore the option of a career in a related field in the future.
