Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

This initiative will be addressing the problem of youth unemployment and poverty in rural communities, while fostering global food security. Unemployment, poverty and food security are global concerns, as these issues have led to youth restiveness and engagement in social vices. This initiative will engage youth in agriculture by making it attractive and providing necessary support and social amenities in local communities in the selected states

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

We are solving the problems of unemployment, poverty and food insecurity as it relates to this initiative, the following are the components of this initiative;
Youth Agricultural Initiative and Outgrower Scheme – we will be engaging with young people in both rural and semi-urban areas in agriculture by providing supports to motivate and encourage the youth.
Our plan is to establish centralized milling and processing plant in Lagos for the processing and packaging of the yields of the farmers (rice and cassava). We currently do not have the capacity to process and package the yield of our farmers, so we need to look for other off-takers who are interested in our farmers produce. If we have our own milling plant we will increase revenue
Also the initiative will identify one major social need of the selected community and meet this need be it water, education or health

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

We started with 10 farmers in 2013 as enterprise but we now have 54 farmers and has been registered as a limited liability company in Nigeria. Due to our off-takers approach our farmers have been able to afford basic needs of live; sending their children to school, meeting their health needs and putting food on their table. Next year we are targeting 1,000 farmers under the scheme (500 for cassava and 500 for rice) in the six South-West State.
As a result of our intervention and working with these small-holder farmers, they have been able to increase their yields from 2 tons/hectare to over 4 tons/hectares of rice annually and 15tons/hectare for cassava. We are working to achieve 7 tons/hectare for rice in the next planting season. Our intervention has resulted in over 100% increase in revenue and profitability. Our aim is to make the business sustainable, profitable & competitive

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Our financial sustainability plan is to keep re-investing some good percentage of our profit into the business and also to keep engaging more farmers on the scheme. Currently, the promoter has invested $25,000 in land acquisition in two communities in Ogun State, Nigeria with initial start up capital of $5,000 making a total of $30,000 since inception.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

We will be engaging 1,000 outgrowers in each of the six state thereby creating 6,000 direct jobs

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

The initiative actually started as a legacy; while I was very young I do see my father travel from Lagos to our hometown in the neighbouring state to support his sibling who are subsistence farmers with seeds and finance. When there yields were out he also linked them with buyers from Lagos. He died in 1990 and his siblings lost that privilege. After my college education and working for about 4 years, I raised a capital of about $5,000 to bring the initiative back to life. We started with just about 10 farmers in that same community but now we have over 50 outgrowers and we have expanded into two other communities focusing on rice and cassava value chain. Now the business has grown to become a limited liability company with huge prospects.
