Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Factory women are a marginalized group in the Egyptian society. 88% of factory women belong to poor families and contribute part or all their salary in the household. Main motive behind joining the labor force is the dire need to obtain an income regardless of how small it is. The inferior social and cultural status of these women contributes to exposing them to several forms of exploitation violence and discrimination at the work place.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Not Guilty: NG facilitators will implement anti harassment awareness sessions. Each factory will be visited four times per month reaching 60 factory workers per factory.
The awareness session forms the central tenant of the proposed project. The material content, activities and pedagogy have been carefully developed to achieve real impact and behavioral changes among factory women and men.
Women and men will understand the following
Harassment and its social and financial implications.
Knowledge of positive strategies for managing feelings and responding to negative situations
Understanding healthy boundaries and respect for others
Knowledge of ways for defense & reporting cases safely
How to break the silence
Engage bystanders
Effect of harassment on productivity & stability of work place
Support facilitator led group therapy sessions
Ensure In-factory follow-up and support

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

In factory 1 Not Guilty provided the program to women only. There were 10 women involved three reported being harassed in the workplace (30%). On our way out of the factory, the men factory workers asked why they were not involved in this training. Not Guilty developed a program for men, and in our next factory with 20 men and 20 women involved 70% of men reported having no idea about the consequences of harassment on women; 75% were amazed that women do not like harassment. 60% of women said that after this training they are more prone to report if there is a safe way to report. 65% of women realized that harassment has nothing to do with the way a woman dresses; 80% had no clue of their rights. 100% of the men loved being involved in the program.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

1. Individual donations or gifts: 15%
2. Grants: 50%
3. Corporate contributions: 20%
4. Earned income: 15%
5. Partnership with private companies like Orange, Ashoka, ADEW, Hope Village, UN Women, GIZ (German Aid), Ford Foundation, New Woman Foundation, Adew, the Coptic Evangelical Organisation for Social Services.
We are working to develop other relations in the private sector that could contribute financially with Not Guilty

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

NG is the first NGO in Egypt to focus & work only on harassment & abuse hence the Ashoka fellowship.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Working against sexual abuse since 2012 mainly among students, I discovered that some factory girls came for counseling suffering from consequences of being sexually abused in the workplace either by a manager, a supervisor or a colleague worker. I produced a documentary called 'A factory of Women" in partnership with the Ford Foundation. In 2015 I published a book: The Silver Box, 10 real stories of factory women who have been sexually abused. Yet, this was not enough. In October 2016 in partnership with GIZ (German Aid in Egypt) there was a platform on harassment in the workplace. Our group chose factory girls because they are a marginalized group. NG designed a program and piloted it in 2 factories. Aha, this needs to be nationwide.

I trust in all the initiatives of this NGO.
The team of Not Guilty is very active and they do a great job!

Behavioral change isn’t something that a person suddenly chooses to adopt. You have to slowly learn a new habit. This means that you have to ‘overwrite’ a new habit over the ingrained, existing habit. This takes time and repetition. That's why this training for factory men and women is so important. What do you think?

Photo of Rafik Bolis

I believe agree and support.

In the U.S., dozens of politicians, Hollywood executives and actors, and media personalities are facing accusations of sexual misconduct, sparked by a wave of allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The 65-year-old producer denies all allegations of non-consensual sex but has apologized for causing "a lot of pain" with "the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past."
The topic arose during Sunday's Miss Universe competition when a fan-submitted question asked why it's important for men and women to work together to address the issue of sexual misconduct.
Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett said men and women should come together to make sure no form of abuse, including sexual harassment, is acceptable.
"Sexual harassment is a form of abuse, and no abuse should be tolerated whether in the workplace or in society," Bennett said.
Let us be proactive in abolishing harassment in the work place. Comments? thoughts?

Photo of Ramy Elmery

Those are the people that make the news because they're Celebrities and Stars .... you can only imagine the struggle of the regular factory workers OR even office workers that are trying to keep their jobs to feed their families!! During my service in the US Army we used to go through such training on a yearly basis, and guess what .... we still had issues because people tend to forget.

Photo of Laila Risgallah

It is a timeless problem, all over the world. WE need to be proactive, make bystanders involved and reporting. Harassers need to be legally indicted for their crimes

More than 90% of egyptian women are sexually harassed ! I think the work of this NGO is VITAL to the egyptian society ! I fully support this brilliant start and I hope that through them we could raise awareness & build resilience.

Photo of Laila Risgallah

Yes, and the sad thing is that only 10% of cases are reported. Many live with their secret all their lives for fear of the shame and guilt of telling

Photo of Mary Hosny

True prevention is better than cure. I support this great courage project . To help women’s work environment to speak up and to go out of her silences. To speak up .

Photo of Lauren Mills

Not only a great vision but also a great implementation plan. I see a huge opportunity for the impact of this program to grow and drive a social movement. It seems especially strong in its ability to inspire its participants to learn; it's not just for sharing information. It meets a deeply felt need with effective methods of change. I am in full support of this project!

Not Guilty is on it, tackling sexual harassment in the workplace:
In the U.S., dozens of politicians, Hollywood executives and actors, and media personalities are facing accusations of sexual misconduct, sparked by a wave of allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The 65-year-old producer denies all allegations of non-consensual sex but has apologized for causing "a lot of pain" with "the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past."

The topic arose during Sunday's competition when a fan-submitted question asked why it's important for men and women to work together to address the issue of sexual misconduct.

Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett said men and women should come together to make sure no form of abuse, including sexual harassment, is acceptable.

"Sexual harassment is a form of abuse, and no abuse should be tolerated whether in the workplace or in society," Bennett said.

Photo of Laila Risgallah

Miss Universe contestants speak about sexual harassment:

Shouldn't we be doing something about it?

Photo of Therese Louis

Very good idea & a great effort, good luck.

Agree and support project and implementation at work field ( safe work environment for egpyptian women's )

Raising awareness in our country is something we need it , keep going.

Photo of Mary Hosny

I fully agree and support

Photo of Dina Maher

I agree and support this project. Changing behavior could only be done but making awarenesses in Egypt which is highly needed specially for women's work field .

Photo of Laila Risgallah

Thank you for your support Therese. So appreciated

Photo of Sameh Wahba

This is huge and we really need to see organizations like these emerge in our society, especially in a country like Egypt where freedoms are suppressed, especially those less fortunate or weaker. I think weaker here fits perfectly in a work environment with both women and men, women being the “weaker sex” in the eyes of the community and them unable, or rather uneducated, on how to fight back, how to say no and how to stop being bullied or harrassed. Reporting incidents sometimes aggregates the problem, so awareness here is key. I think this is a great initiative.

Photo of Mary Hosny

I fully agree awareness is only true key to change behavior. I fully support this project which supports women’s safety’s work environment . The pilot project video showed and confirmed a great leadership courage and success. Wish possibilities of this project implementation in Egypt and Middle East .

Photo of Germin Ghaly

really indeed we hope to implemented all Egyptian factories to support womens safety at work .

Photo of Laila Risgallah

Thank you Sameh. Yes awareness is crucial. We also train women on safe ways or reporting. Not Guilty has designed a strategy for reporting that will remove doubt and fear as well as protect others from false reporting.

Photo of Laila Risgallah

Our dream is implementing this project in all factories in EGypt and having a certificate for "Safe Factories for Women" where factory owners will pride in being part of this movement.

Photo of Laila Risgallah

So last night at the Miss Universe contest they asked Miss Jamaica who was one of the three finalists this question: "Sexual harassment has been at the forefront of the news headlines, why is it important for men and women to work together tackling this issue?
I felt so proud as the founder and president of Not Guilty that we are pioneers in including both men and women in our project; that we realized that men are a crucial part of the solution to harassment.

Photo of Rosette Mansour

Raising awareness in our country is something we need it , Not Guilty always do it a right way , serving society with passion and excellence, totally support this project for the sake of our beloved country to raise awareness in society

I believe it is time now to assign a qualified and trusted organization like Not Guilty to lead the harrasment project . Many women are suffering from this abuse and not having the required knowledge to stop it . We need to teach our daughters how to be strong women and how to act while faced these situations. We need to increase our females' awareness regarding harrasment. I delegate Not Guilty to implement this project in Egypt.
