Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

According to FAO/UN, Brazil's agriculture is strategic for the world to achieve the Millennium Goals in the fight against hunger. However, Brazilian family farmers face difficulties in being profitable and sustainable. Stewardship is lacking for use of technologies and Good Agricultural Practices. In addition to the difficulty to supply its own needs, Brazil's agriculture has not harnessed its strong potential to become, in the near future as the FAO predicted, the solution to the challenge of global food security.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

The objectives of "Healthy Farmer Program", project of scientific research are to increase the productivity in the familiar properties, by the incentive to the correct and safe use of technologies; and promote Stewardship so that farmers take care of natural resources (Water, Soil, Forests).
Leaders of the Healthy Farmer Program have demonstrated to business managers the importance of adopting strategies that increase their competitiveness, while supporting sustainable development in the communities and clusters where maintain their operations. Therefore, agribusiness and food industries should not be far from a gigantic market such as Brazil.
Thus, companies have already supported this program:
IHARA: www.ihara.com.br; CEREST: www.cerest.ce.gov.br; APROSOJA: www.aprosoja.com.br; HORTIFRUTIFLORES: http://hortifrutiflores.blogspot.com.br; ANDEF, association in Brazil of global companies, such as Bayer, Basf, Monsanto and Syngenta, among others: www.andef.com.br.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

In five years, the Healthy Farmer Program covered all five continental regions of Brazil: North, South, East, West and Center-West. Therefore, the results represents experiences of the whole Brazilian territory.
This work totaled the presence in 14, of the 26 Brazilian states, operating in 33 cities. Total of 3,280 farmers have been evaluated and trained, which cultivate 31 crops/food (see video: http://inpesbr.org/).
Preliminary results are added to the testimonies of some of the 3,280 farmers benefited (https://youtu.be/Idupwgs-6M8).
We can to compare these results to the research by the International Institute for Sustainability (http://www.iis-rio.org), which concluded the training of farmers for handing technologies and sustainable management of Water, Soil and Forests has improved food safety and quality and profitability.
Therefore, his innovative Methodology indicates the potential of Healthy Farmer Program to be replicated throughout Brazil and other poor and emerging na

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

For the period 2018-2023, the "Healthy Farmer Program" has the Work Plan which provides for the development of agronomic and medical-scientific researches and consultancy, whose studies will culminate in eight projects:
The total budget for 2018-2013, which meets the Work Plan, totals US $ 400,000, which means contributions, on average, of US$ 80,000 per year.
These financial resources will be contributed according to the following forecast:
- Partner companies and supporters: US$ 64,000 (80%).
- Annuity paid by Companies associated to INPES: US$% 12,000 (15%)
- Various collections (consultancies, seminars, courses, sale of publications and others: US$% 4,000 (5%)

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

- Its Innovative Methodology, which has benefited 3,280 farmers, indicates the potential to replicate this know-how throughout Brazil and other poor and emerging agricultural nations.
- Integration between two action fronts: Agronomic stewardship management allied to Occupational Safety and Health.
- "Healthy Farmer Program" is the first program, in Brazil, in the numerical dimensions and social reach realized, to adopt the Creating Shared Value.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Personal testimony of
Bernardo de Oliveira
Familiar Farmer
Living in Ubajara County, Ceará State - Brazil

"Since I was a kid, I have been working with my father on the farm.
I got up early, worked the farm until noon, and went to school in the afternoon.
Years later, when I got married, I started working alone with vegetables.
This little land I bought with the money
I earned planting vegetables.
Finally, I had managed to realize my dream!
What is the sale price? Not much, at all.
How's life?
“Man”, this is the greatest happiness I have.
Money is not that big, is it?
But happiness is more important, you see?"
