Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Beekeeping is multi-dimensional in terms of providing solutions faced by rural communities.
Aimed at reducing chronic poverty levels in rural communities which stands at 19.7% especially in Northern Uganda which was war ravaged for past 20 years. Uganda pristine nature offers up-tapped bee forage which is being looked at for charcoal burning hence degrading the environment beekeeping is best alternative. Beekeeping offers ample time & is less capital intensive so complements agriculture.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Our social business modal is the first of its kind in the beekeeping industry in Uganda coupled with low cost modern hives appropriate to the smallholder beekeepers, skilling the beekeepers in best beekeeping management practices, phone application that profiles the beekeepers would be effective with a strong extension system to provide technical support at grass root building long term business relationships with the beekeepers. Honey shops that have both forward & backward linkages play various roles like collecting honey during harvest season, access point for beekeeping inputs and also selling point for finished honey & other bee products at pre urban centers (sustaining its self). We have already established market locally and are looking to explore the East African market and this will only happen once we scale-up production with smallholder beekeepers.
Incentives like "phone for Honey", " solar kit for honey" are some ideas that can be explored to foster development.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

Take an example of Lamwo in Northern Uganda who has also been lately joined by refugees from South Sudan, they are over 200 smallholder beekeepers who were able to produce over 12 metric tons ($ 23,300) however, they are under performing considering on average they have 5 hives and yet if they all had a minimum of 30 improved hives that would mean a total of 6,000 hives producing a total of minimum 50 metric tons fetching them $ 97,200. To transform to this would require 2 years of non stop work channeled towards stimulating production at the smallholder beekeepers. There would be a good chance of preparing the beekeepers for organic certification but for starters this would require to pilot with a few in specific area considering you wold require to totally control the operation zone.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

The critical stage is the initial investment which should see through production then later the biggest motivation would be the beekeepers earning higher returns and this would have a ripple effect to the surrounding community members and the laggards. The profits generated would be recouped back into the social entreprise to see it grow and manage even better.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

The Honey value chain in Uganda is segmented into two;
1. The middlemen who dominate the sector and rip off smallholder beekeepers with low prices.
2. Social entreprises like Golden Bees Ltd who are building social business modals directly with the beekeepers & offering fair prices and recorgnize the beekeepers as a central part of the value chain. This also results into good quality honey and beekeepers get incentives like trainings and access to proper inputs.
