Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

The initiative is trying to address childhood obesity and raise awareness early about how healthy diet and physical activity can prevent this if promoted early in children as they grow. It also follows up obese children identified at outreaches till they attain normal weights and body mass index. It also wants to address the dearth of research data on childhood obesity by collection and analysis of data during school and community based outreach

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

The proposed solution is reduction in rising incidence of obesity especially childhood obesity and collection of data to accurately estimate the national prevalence of childhood obesity in Nigeria. The most promising aspects for creating shared value is that we focus more on the age where the gains of prevention, early detection and management are great. We not only give these children information, we ensure that they understand it by making out time for them to use illustrations to explain how much they have learnt. The parents are also involved by our report card made for each child which states the weight, height, body mass index, the interpretation of the data and recommendations. Through this exercise, we also identify undernourished children and make appropriate recommendations. So, parents are actively involved in managing the child by giving healthy diet and encouraging exercise.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

The impacts of our work to date are that through the outreaches, we identified both obese and undernourished children and adults, educated them on the predisposing factors and how to manage either condition. We have educated over 80 people about the dangers of obesity and the non communicable diseases it is a known risk factor for. Those with high blood pressure were counselled on the nature of the disease and linked to community health services. This people will be agents of raising further awareness about obesity in the community. This translates to more people making healthier choices. Our facebook page has over 100 followers and our posts on nutrition are viewed by over 180 people. The environmental impact is that as more fruits and vegetables are taken, the waste generated by the community consists of more biodegradable matter. This will help achieve a sustainable environment.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Our initiative and projects are mainly funded by donations at the moment. A weighing scale and tape measures for measurements were donated. The cardboards and stationery used to create report cards to parents of participants were also donated.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

We focus on prevention of childhood obesity and use research to influence the policy to sustain this

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

I shared the idea in 2016 with five other passionate global citizens after I encountered a 15 year old who was obese and could hardly walk comfortably. Her younger sister was also overweight. I better understood that obesity is a process that occurs over a period of time and sadly often may be missed by caregivers. We brainstormed about parents becoming educated about the predisposing factors and how to prevent the childhood obesity or detect it early so the long term morbidity associated with the condition will be minimized. Being passionate advocates that we are, we made further research and were further inspired by the increasing knowledge about the need to tackle obesity early and we have been unrelenting about this pursuit since then.
