Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Indonesia has 82.038 villages, 26% of which is poor villages. Most of Poor Villages have same problem that caused by urbanization. Urbanization comes because of business opportunity lack in the village. This is make investment not come. In other side, Aquaculture is the fastest growing food industry sector with annual growth rate of 8.6%. The highest Commodity transaction is white shrimp, but most of traditional shrimp production still unpredictable and not environment friendly because the waste water is toxic.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

We offer business in box (technology and system) to make shrimp aquaculture easy to implement for villagers as new farmers. In the application of technology, farmers will be trained and still get technical support during the cultivation period to be able run the ponds. Raw materials will be supplied by us to guarantee the quality. In encouraging the management of farmers, we facilitate farmers to found community that calls 'Koperasi vannamei'. It will help to gain access to capital, raw material suplier hub, farmers insurance, organizing training, and other aspect to make farmers get better circumstances to growth. For the post-harvest processing and selling, we have Trader. Trader is joint venture / operation consist of us, the investor, and 'Koperasi Vannamei' (farmers).
Focus on production, we over closed system with biotechnology innovation to more productive, predictable, and friendly environment. We increase of shrimp density in the ponds and keep the water in health level

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

1. Sustainable economic growth at village : 1) Implementing our little module (output 1 ton shrimp/cycle) make 3 new farmers with employment 14 freelance worker (5 at construction and 3 at harvest time). This module growth the investment in the villages about 24,036 USD with potential revenue per cycle is 6,123 USD. We have another module (see infographics) that potential implement 4 and 20 times from this depend village condition and availability of land production. 2) Our business model and system also contribute for sustainable growth.
2. Rulalization : This business opportunity will attract villager comeback and also investor from city.
3. Increase quality of human resources : Shrimp production will increase of protein consumption at the village.
4. Healthy environment : Our biotechnology will recover the toxic level especially nitrogen waste like Ammonium (NH4+) and Nitrite (NO2-) to the healthy level. The solid waste will be processed to be organic fertilizer.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

According to financial feasibility estimates in infographics, we are very optimistic this business will sustain for a long-term. Shrimp is premium commodity, the market is open both in local and export.

This Initiation has started since early 2016 until now (2017). All cost are financed through soft loans (non-banking). The total budget is estimated to be around 48,146 USD. In short term (next 2 years), we plan to go up with 3 estate modules. Total investment needed is approximately 2.12 million USD. In estimation, it comes from grant (15%), farmers investment (46%), trader investment (22%), Arthanimas (17%). Farmers and trader investment can be sourced from farmers, investors, banks, and venture capital. Arthanimas contributed to financing the technology development & business system.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

1. Production technology: a) Our technology is closed system culture with recirculating system to remove both physical and biological intruder and waste, others is almost open system; b) High density and intensive shrimp, it will Increase shrimp harvest productivity from 0.9 Kg/m2 to 3.7 Kg/m3; c) Our System can implement at all village, not only at coastal villages.
2. Strengthening communities through cooperatives
3. Our model business implement as business in box like franchise but modified

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

This initiative comes from cumulative background of initiators. First, the technology of shrimp comes from academic research background. Second, the system and business model inspired from implementation fertilizer technology (patented by one of the initiator) in 1990's. He use 'inti-plasma' concept. 'Inti' is the owner or core of technology, 'plasma' is the entity (communities) that use the technology. 'Inti' and 'plasma' connected each other with some role to growth together. From that, the communities need formal institution that unite each other. Inspired by Cooperative, founded by Muhammad Hatta, our first vice Indonesian President, the idea of 'Koperasi Vannamei' came up. Third, this initiative also inspired from coastal fish traditional farmer phenomenon that highly dependent on natural condition when other initiator become volunteer as a teacher in coastal village.
