Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

The program addresses two social issues besetting banana farming communities in Mindanao.
The first issue is the increasing incidence of subsistence poverty in the rural areas. The second issue is the increasing population of Out of School Youth (OSY) in farming communities.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

The program aims to train displaced banana farmers and out of school youths in selected areas during the lean season at the banana plantations in South Mindanao. Program participants will be trained in construction skills to help them shift to this industry which is not subject to the seasonality of agricultural production demands. The program envisions that with steady employment, the income of families living in banana farming communities will be able to sustain the basic needs of all family members.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

A total of 185 participants graduated from the program implemented across five municipalities since December 2016. Out of this number, the Asiapro Foundation was able to help 59 graduates land a job in different construction projects sites in Davao City. The Foundation continues to track the work and success of these graduates.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

100% of the operating budget of Asiapro Foundation comes from Asiapro Multipurpose Cooperative which provides an annual allocation to the Foundation. The Construction Skills Training Program is one of the flagship programs of the Foundation. It is expected that this program will be expanded to other agricultural areas where the Foundation operates. But since the Foundation’s own funds are limited, it can only target three trainings in one year.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

The multi-stakeholder approach and concrete job assistance to graduates make the program unique. The Foundation works closely with the target Local Government Unit (LGU), the Provincial Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and the Public Employment Service Office of the LGU to to ensure efficient use of existing resources and provide credibility to the program. The conduct of the trainings is market-driven, based on Asiapro's solid knowledge of actual sourcing requirements.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

The implementation of the program was prompted by a nationwide survey conducted by the Asiapro Foundation in May 2016 to find out the living conditions of coop members nationwide. The survey results showed that members in the banana industry have the lowest family monthly net income--below US $ 100. Despite having work at the banana plantations, the workers’ meagre income was further affected by work displacement due to factors such as: severe weather conditions resulting in low productivity, and peace and order situation. While there is job rotation among cooperative members engaged in banana farming, another group of coop members has difficulty meeting manning requests for skilled construction workers. Thus the Construction Skills Training for Stay Home Banana Farmers Project was conceptualized to bridge this gap.

The idea gives a solution which needs multi-tasking skill. We can apply the different combination where the jobs are of similar nature but have lean period at different time or the industry where we need good number of human resources.
