Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

African youth have self-censored their voice and developed apathy towards the political ecosystem. More than 66% of the youth in Africa feel that government does not represent community interest. This problem can be traced back to a defective educational system, which gradually shapes people’s thoughts into a collective consciousness. Restrictive ideologies and practices, approved by blindly followed beliefs, also lead to Apathy.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Picture a traveling truck of change moving from one community to another. Visualize the truck fitted with a community radio unit, where African Philosophies like Ubuntu, Harambee, and Ujamaa are shared with people along the way. Imagine these people becoming so empowered, that they feel the need to tailor the Fatuma’s Voice concept for their needs by starting local forums.

We will then provide support, and basic tools to create resource centers run by local communities. We will include an open artistic platform for conversations and activities linking talents to social issues.

Our social impact will go beyond numbers by including quantitative and qualitative factors and involving the community in defining social metrics. What is the projected outcome? We see a community with improved understanding about social issues and attitude change towards political accountability.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

Since we begun on 12th July 2013, we have held 142 forums where we hosted 1,420 performers and attracted a live audience of 15,000 participants. We have seen an improved understanding about social issues within communities we have worked with. We have experiences people changing their attitudes towards political accountability by realizing that their personal action or inaction is connected to the political space. We involve the community in defining the social metrics and indicators they expect to see. People are interviewed before and after the forums and the feedback compiled in testimonials and case studies. We use simple tools like; open debates, political art, conscious music, expressive dance and social-issue based theatre, to reaffirm people about the significance of their voice. We managed to replicate the forum now run independently by the local youth in 3 other counties.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

10% Individual donations or gifts
60% Grants
10% Corporate contributions
20% Earned income

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

A community centered approach where people contribute to decision making and impact evaluation.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Fatuma's Voice was inspired by a 50-year-old woman who was forced into silence since birth. The average person speaks 20,000 words a day. Since Fatuma has not spoken for 50 years, she has Millions of words trapped within her. These words keep accumulating each day and if nothing is done, she will become a time bomb ready to explode. Fatuma is a metaphor representing Kenya, which gained independence more than 50 years ago. Fatuma also symbolizes people who don’t raise their voice against social issues affecting them as well as others. When we shared this image, people started picking up the identity of Fatuma and speaking out on her behalf. And that is how Fatuma's Voice was born!
