Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Oversupply of micronutrients dense fruits, vegetables, pumpkin seeds, pulses and other crops in peak season and huge losses postharvest estimated at 30% to 50%, Hence food insecurity and micronutrients deficiency remain a challenge. The food losses are connected to managerial and technical limitations in harvesting technique and also lack of nutrition knowledge that drive the need to preserve and store micronutrients rich food.

The Model safeguard available nutritious food, focus is on micronutrients dense food such as pumpkin seeds, vegetable, fruits and other food produce in excess supply in peak season. Appropriate solar drying and innovative preservation techniques are employed not only preserve food but safeguard nutrients and mitigate post harvest losses. locally developed solar drying technologies preserve locally available fruits, vegetables and pumpkin seeds in excess supply in peak season and eliminate nutritious dense food losses . Bearing in mind that micronutrients deficiency is a root cause of children mortality the project address micronutrients food security. Moreso Project promote awareness on benefits of diet diversity, eating safely dried micronutrients dense fruits, vegetables pumpkin seeds all season and extend soya milk processing techniques for food diversity.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

In the mini Pilot project in Gokwe south; fruits, pumpkin seeds, vegetables and nutritious produce in abundance during peak season were safely preserved using solar driers and stored reducing unnecessary nutritious food postharvest losses by at least 90% attributed to lack of appropriate food preservation techniques and preventing environment pollution attributed to food rotting. The preserved micronutrients dense food was available even in most parts of the lean period to provide nutrition balance and to effect post harvest losses averted compared to the previous season without such an intervention. The lesson learnt is that local solutions are ideal to solve local challenges since the material used to develop solar dryers is re-purposed available material.

As the founder of the Nutrigain Trust i was born and bread in the locality and always wondered why most families would have food security challenges when our area had so much food rotting in the peak season. It is the thought process that informed into research on what technologies we could develop locally to optimise preservation and safeguard our available food without having much to depend on food aids whilst we are a food producer.
