Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

B.Barefoot Honey addresses the following problems, faced by the last-mile rural communities:
1 Increased dependence on, and reducing returns from, conventional farm-based income sources.
2 Disproportionate distribution of work burden between men and women in rural areas, due to distress, migration and urbanization.
3 Lack of skills and avenues for alternate and additional sources of income in Hinterlands.
4 Absence / limited reach of ecosystem enablers and government support systems for livelihood and enterprise.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

With a holistic approach to Apiculture, B.Barefoot Honey engages rural women in the production of pure and natural honey. We facilitate structured and hands-on beekeeping training programs, provide the required equipment with a built-in recovery model and procure the extracted honey at fair market prices to further sell it to high-end consumers. Our model creates shared value by –
1 Collaborating with committed ground partners that are trusted by the beneficiary community.
2 Leveraging inclusive and participatory approaches to scout for, and select beneficiary groups.
3 Providing consistent support and continued capacity building to the beneficiary.
4 Promoting gender equity through a changed perception of gender roles and abilities.
5 Promoting sustainable practices through environmental stewardship workshops.
6 Building awareness of nutrition and family health.
7 Easing income generating without compromising on women’s daily chores and family needs.

Since its inception in 2015, B.Barefoot has been operating in 3 locations–Zanzibar (Tanzania), Uttarakhand (India) and Kerala (India). We have a 4-pronged approach to impact–
Livelihoods and income:
Scale–36 women have enrolled in the program. Zanzibar–12, India–24
Depth–437 USD of income expected per year per woman in Zanzibar and 369 USD in India
Interest-free Credit of 200 USD for procurement of equipment, to be paid back in 40 months in Zanzibar and credit of 308 USD, to be paid back in 40 months in India
Life-skills:
Scale–24 women + 6 local staff trained in beekeeping (India)
12 women + 3 local staff trained in beekeeping (Zanzibar)
Environmental Stewardship:
Scale–30 persons sensitized through workshops
Depth–Potential of 10 Kgs of honey to harvest per hive through sustainable beekeeping
Pollination and Biodiversity:
Scale–64no. of bee boxes with an approximate 640,000 no. of bees (India)

*To reduce strain on, and catalyse, the financial sustainability of our working model and the enterprise, given the long gestation period - from scouting and selection, to harvesting and collection, and down to the final sale, we plan to cushion our working capital needs by procuring honey from existing local beekeeping cooperatives, in turn helping them get market linkages and we get reasonable revenues for reinvestment. The said co-ops or collectives not only go through quality assessments (for process and product) but also get relevant training for sustainable beekeeping. At the same time ensuring that such revenue, in the long run, does not exceed more than 30%.

The Barefoot Approach, since inception in 1968, has a multidimensional view of poverty alleviation for last-mile development and growth. To build peaceful and inclusive communities we go beyond monetary terms and address essential needs/problems of the poor. We provide them with the freedom to pursue what they see as most valuable for gaining better control over their own socio-economic aspirations. B.Barefoot Honey is an organic extension, of Barefoot College’s Solar Engineering & Electrification Program, to improve scope and depth of impact by broadening avenues for livelihood generation at the last-mile. Barefoot values like immersive and experiential learning, co-creation and appreciation for traditional knowledge are a pedestal for our like-minded, committed and self-driven management team of professionals, from varied walks of life.
