Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Malnutrition, postharvest loss and poverty. Cassava farmers in Nigeria lose 70% of their revenue to postharvest losses and inadequate modern value chain development and processing. Each year 1 million Nigerian children die before their 5th birthday with malnutrition responsible for half of the deaths; 30% of children under 5 years old suffer from vitamin A deficiency in Nigeria, and 1 in 13 pregnant women die daily due to malnutrition. This results to $1billion loss in GDP annually and has left 75% to live on $1daily

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Our solution is embedded the uniqueness of the interrelationship among players along the vitamin A cassava value chain. We shall increase access to quality vitamin A biofortified stems for farmers to increase yield by establishing an outgrower farmers’ clusters with 1000 foundational farmers in Ileogbo and Kuta communities of Osun State, Nigeria to reach 75,950 farmers in 3years. Providing stems free to the farmers for the first season with training on best agronomic practices to increase yield. Land shall be provided free for female farmers on this project. 500,000 tons of biofortified cassava tubers and 2,285,000 bundles of quality seeds/stems will be produced in 3 years using ICT and mobile technology to deliver best agronomic practices to farmers. The tubers shall be processed at our modern processing factory to reduce postharvest loss by 65% and make more nutritious food available, accessible and affordable to 3.5million people annually reducing the hunger rate by 25%.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

Our products are developed from conventionally bred biofortified staple food crops to assure about 35% to 100% daily requirement of essential micronutrients to the target population. A successful scaling up of this idea will save the country over $1billion in GDP annually. The high yield varieties provided to 1000 farmers in the first year on 300acres will produce stems for 10000 farmers in 12 months and 65500 farmers in 2 years leading to a minimum of 500,000 tons of biofortified vitamin A cassava being produced annually as raw material to make more nutritious food available, accessible and affordable especially to rural communities. scaling this up can have a huge positive impact in the country over a 7 year period. We have demonstrated this in Ayedire Local Government of Osun state Nigeria where a model factory has been set up and this has created 16 direct jobs and 48 indirect jobs in 4 months. job creation and economic improvement of livelihood, reduction in infant mortality.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Our sustainability plan is majorly through earned income which comes from the sale of our products where we have developed 15 value added products from vitamin A cassava by adding value to tradition. due to the huge demand for these products, earned revenue accounts for 65% of our annual budget. this shall be the major long term source of revenue with the rising product demand which shall account for 95% of our annual budget. we also make money from agricultural service provision which accounts for 25%. grants account for 10% of our annual budget

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

employing innovative product development to make more nutritious foods available, accessible and affordable though staple foods by adding value to tradition. Our products are developed from conventionally bred biofortified staple food crops to assure about 35% to 100% daily requirement of essential micronutrients to the target population. This has given us an edge creating cost effective and sustainable ways to address malnutrition to create massive economic impact.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

We came together to establish and run CATO FOODS & AGROALLIED GLOBAL CONCEPTS to address food security challenges by adding value to staple foods. Driven by the same passion to make the world a better place to live. To see pregnant women and children live their full potentials. Motivated to contribute to nutritional and agriculture value chain development knowing that an investment here generates over 200% in economic returns. We are focused, determined, solution driven and result oriented. Growing up was challenging as a result of poor nutrition in the community. I have always wanted to be involved in solutions that can impact the population's health positively in a sustainable manner. Malnutrition related infant and maternal mortality has always raised so much concern for me. In 2015, we started implementing a pilot to test the viability of our solution. It worked!
