Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

As a mother of two lovely children I thrive to provide my children with healthy food choices. At the age of 6 my daughter became aware of healthy food and she started to select what is good for her body and brain. However, some of the school canteens are battling my efforts by providing junk food. This issue and others have contributed heavily to the issue of childhood obesity epidemic. School canteen with junk food has become a pandemic that require instant action to create an impactful change in children lifestyle.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

The prevalence of obese and overweight children has increased dramatically in the last decade. In Saudi Arabia (SA), the obesity prevalence has doubled from 11.3% to 24.5% during the last 14 years, mainly due to the lack of physical activates. In 2016, a study in SA found that the majority of food and drinks in girls’ school canteen are HFSS. To solve this, research shows that educational programs, alongside other strategies, are very powerful tools to tackle the issue. I have an experience in public health promotion with my husband, Dr Hosam Zowawi. we have been working together to raise awareness about antimicrobial resistance. Due to this, we have established strong connection in the public health, which would help to facilitate my initiative further. Blooming Bs offers educational programs, raise awareness about the healthy eating choices and physical activities. It provides school children the option of receiving healthy lunch boxes.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

We have successfully passed the business planning and preliminary establishment stages. I did my research about the topic and identified the depth of the issue. My tailored business model is built to ensure a transformational impact is created among selected children. I have rented a shop, designed and built the main kitchen and offices. I also formed and hired a multidisciplinary team of passionate women. Using my international connection, I am currently recruiting Blooming Bs Mentors and Advisory Board. The shortlisted candidates are extraordinary individuals with outstanding track record in hospitality, social entrepreneurship or/and health promotion.
We are now operating a school canteen with more than 1000 students, and catering a childcare centre with around 70 children. The uptake of our healthy food is increasing dramatically, especially green salads & fruit salads. We are now also in a progress stages of contracting with other 2 childcare centres, 1 school & a science museum.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Earned income 70%
Grants 30%

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

We are the first entity to provide healthy food options for school canteens in Saudi Arabia, in a very attractive and child friendly way.

During Blooming Bs expansion journey, I will be developing a holistic viewpoint to adopt improved and more developed operation process and ideas. We at Blooming Bs also aim to empower Saudi and Arab women and creating more job opportunities. Ultimately, I see Blooming Bs as an upscale international trusted brand by parents, schools and governments.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

I was living in Australia with my family. We went to a top tree challenge and there were a family from the GCC, and one of the family members (a teenage girl) was overweight and she was struggling to continue the challenge. Her family was making fun of her and bullying her throughout the journey. At the end she gave up and she was crying and didn't finish the challenge. Then, few weeks after we came back to SA and lived in Riyadh. I was looking for a school for my daughter and was shocked to learn that the majority of the school don't have any healthy options and only have junk food. So I realised that there is a big problem that need interventions and solutions.
