Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Inhalation of smoke from cooking and heating kills more than 4 million people each year! That’s more than Aids, Malaria and Tuberculosis combined. 14000 of our Kenyan brothers and sisters die every single year through household Air pollution. •deforestation – occurs in africa at three times the rate of the rest of the world, mainly due to the need for fuel for cooking. •poverty – many families spend 20% of their income buying cooking fuel.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Kencoco briquettes are environmentally friendly briquette and converted from 100 % coconut shell charcoal into a useful energy source. Our briquettes are more affordable than most existing fuel since they have a higher calorific value and have long burning and heating qualities. They are user-friendly, clean and nearly smokeless. The coconut shell briquettes serve the community with clean energy and reduce deforestation. Kencoco also offer’s waste management solutions by collecting and using waste coconut shells and husks as raw materials. The company has empowered women who are key players in the entire value chain.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

Our briquettes reduces deforestation with its subsequent impact on climate change and wildlife habitat. For every ton we sell, we save 20 trees. This is a significant number as Kenya depletes forest cover by 70,000 Ha per year mostly for wood to make charcoal. Also reduce major health problems (respiratory disease, eye problems, burns) with their subsequent effects on the health budget and quality of life. 15,000 Kenyans, mostly women and children die from respiratory diseases every year. This is more than Malaria, Aids and TB combined. Also reduce poverty by dramatically reducing the cost of cooking fuel. Savings of up to 50 % can be achieved freeing money for other activities. An average household can save up to $180 per year enough to take two children to school. Also develop an industry that will provide direct and indirect jobs and help the local economy

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

From internally generated sales revenue. Our BEP for the basic briquette is therefore 86 tons per year or 7 tons per month and with a production capacity capacity of 240 tons per year, we can make a reasonably good profit to sustain the business. Our annual budget will now be 80 % from earned income and 20 % from grants.

Briquettes are a form of renewable energy made from compressed, dried out or carbonated agri-waste.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

22 years ago my son was born and was diagnosed with a respiratory condition commonly referred to as asthma. Now this was especially hard for him because he grew up in a Swahili household where cooking was one of the main activities being done every single day and the inhalation of toxic fumes made his condition worse. 20 or so odd years later we discovered that there was a way we could make charcoal that was completely smokeless and completely harmless to someone’s health and at that point Kencoco was born.
