Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Access to suitable food is a basic human right as food eaten can impact health greatly. ClearKarma empowers consumers and food businesses to make trusted food choices. Small food businesses often lack expertise to manage required food information safely. ClearKarma builds a reference food register in terms of knowledge/safety to know what food to buy and what to eat at restaurants or at home. We act on diets management, impacting patients’ health, to help prevent chronic diseases diabetes, obesity or food allergies.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

ClearKarma provides a platform for trusted food information supporting food businesses to manage their data and guides people in understanding and adapting food diets with digital intuitive tools to improve population’s health. ClearKarma to secures data from table to farm across the entire food supply chain, using the Blockchain cutting-edge technology making its food register forgery-proof. Thus it allows food businesses on the one hand to comply with regulation and protect their data, but also to manage information which has to be shared to protect consumers. Transparency empowers consumers make trusted and responsible food choices, enabling reductions of sanitary and social costs. ClearKarma’s third-party service enables digital transformation for all food businesses lacking expertise in food data management (reaching out to producers in rural areas) to update their digital catalogs, menus and compliant information for food labels or eCommerce in a faster and more reliable way.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

ClearKarma has piloted over 10 web and mobile applications with focus on small food businesses to help them better inform and therefore better sell their products through managing trusted food information. We would like to scale some successful pilots. ClearKarma’s trusted menus and product catalogues have been used by more than 5.000 people to know about food content and allergens in menus they have been served, which increased confidence and safety in their food choices. We conceived a pilot with a restaurant who wants to score and show the amount of local food suppliers he is working with. Helping food businesses and consumers buying more local foods can have a high leverage on social and environmental impact. We run a campaign in a corporate canteen which resulted in reducing food waste by 30% through adapting purchasing depending on what people will eat. We have shown that people are more likely to decide what to eat even a week before when information on food content is provided.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

3. Corporate contributions = 10% 4. Earned income = 90%

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

Listing food allergens on constantly changing food ingredients and dishes or training staff properly to inform about the allergen content of food is complex and time consuming. Restaurant owners mostly lack expertise to keep a menu up-to-date. ClearKarma is in a unique position to solve this problem, tracing food information along the entire supply-chain, allowing people suffering from food allergies or special diets, a better life.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Three of ClearKarma’s dedicated founding members have experienced a loss in their family or need to be careful due health conditions triggered by foods. Sylvie’s father died of a heart attack (too much cholesterol in his diet) and her uncle passed away because of diabetes type 2, caused by too much sugar consumption and lack of understanding about what to eat. She wanted to help other families not to live the same tragedy and therefore create tools to educate populations and help them manage their personal health related-diets. Britta has lost a close friend allergic to sesame who died of an anaphylactic shock while traveling and consuming foods at a restaurant. Ina and her young daughter have multiple food allergies and intolerances. They are both concerned about making the right food choices and finding suitable alternatives, to broaden the spectrum of what they can eat.

Dear Sylvie Chin,

I just went through your application and really liked your idea. Since this competition gives points for peer review, I was wondering if it would be possible for you to evaluate our submission as I too will be doing the same for yours. As you would have noticed in the design quotient you have marks for EVALUATION which you get when you review other applications. When others review your application you get points for IDEA. To find my application you will have to Select ‘‘PHASE> Prize entry’’. On the right section of page, under the heading ‘‘FOCUS AREAS’’ click on "WATER". Go to Page 3> Click "Evaluate" on application titled "Turning the tables for Temiar tribe of Malaysia". I would also appreciate if you either applaud us or leave a comment on our page if you deem us worthy.

Thank you very much.
