Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?
The idea proposed by the Water Users Association (WUA) "Ob Umed" is aimed at solving the problem of the population of Porshinev community (jamoat) in providing irrigation and drinking water. The association proposed an idea of installing a water supply line to each house with the installation of counter with the aim to save water. Instaling a water supply line to each house is the first practice in rural areas in Tajikistan.
Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?
According to the idea of the WUA "Ob Umed", the problem solution is to continue the installation water supply line to each house with counter, and also cover schools and kindergartens, health centers and other public buildings in the Porshinev community. This practice:
First, it assists in provision of clean drinking water to the population, including schoolchildren and pupils of kindergartens;
Second, it will prevent women from hard work in carrying water from streets and other distant places, and, it can facilitate their work to get water directly at home for washing, cooking and other household needs;
Third, it contributes to saving water, reducing water losses and increasing the volume of water for irrigation purposes;
Fourth, it facilitates the improvement of the socio-economic and sanitary-ecological state of environment;
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work
Today, 62 households in the Porshinev community, Shugnan district of GBAO have access to clean drinking water right in their home. The population residing in these house is 388 people, 202 of them are women and-elderly people, 96- young people, 166 -children of preschool age.
Installing the water supply line can make better the sanitary and hygienic state of environment. In addition, the idea provides an opportunity to save water and direct it more to irrigation and, thus, contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the local environment.
The household receives water due to the counter and pays a certain amount of money for using water. This fund will be used to keep the system in a permanent working condition. To this end, the association intends to employ two plumbers and thus create new jobs for local residents.
Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?
Long-term financial sustainability of the project will be provided by the water users’ membership fee, payment for the use of drinking water supply installing to home, payment for the use of irrigation pumping system, as well as through the provision of various types of small-scale services. The total amount of income received from each source is more than $ 2280 per year.
Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?
Our project is still the unique idea to provide the population with drinking water in rural areas.
Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.
