Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

1. Access to clean, safe and affordable drinking water. 2. Environmental Pollution resulting from bottled water.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Eco Water seeks to provide a solution to enable access to clean and safe drinking water at a very low cost and in a way which does not endanger our environment with plastic bottles. With this Solution we install commercial grade and sophisticated water purification and vending machines that dispenses filtered and pure water at different public areas. The vending process involves the use of eco-friendly re-usable water flasks and an integrated PayGo system which allows automatic payment via a card or coins. The use of eco-friendly re-usable water bottle will cut-off packaging cost, making drinking water cheaper and affordable even to people of low income level. On an estimate, Eco Water costs not more than 200 Tanzania Shillings a liter (0.1 dollar); hence with only 1,000 Tanzania Shillings (half a dollar), one can get 5 liters of water which should be enough for a day use.

To date Eco water has managed to install water 5 stations at St. Augustine University of Tanzania. Our Stations provide affordable drinking water to over 7,000 students and 500 staff members at the campus. Before our Solution, while at campus; especially during lectures at day time, students relied on bottled water sold at kiosks and cafeterias for their drinking water. At an average, a liter of bottled drinking water is sold at between 700 -1,000 Tanzania Shillings. However, students at this University could not afford this amount of water a day as it would mean for them to spend between 2,100 -3,000 Tanzania Shillings to buy only water, apart from their daily meals and other necessities. With our solution students can drink up to five liters a day. Environmentally our solution is creating a green campus where there no discarded water bottles.

Income generated from our solution is enough to make the project sustainable. However to scale-up this project to other institution or public area would require other sources of financial support.

your idea and effort, both are good and promising. But to maintain and monitor may be an issue. Due to distribution of quality water at different point may not only increase the cost but reliability of availability may be an issue. I don't know if disposable glasses are being used for drinking purpose or fixed containers.

Interesting proposal. Who is your target audience? Are you targeting low-income customers too?

Thank you Mr. Chris! Our primary target will include students at all levels, patients at hospitals...we actually target low income customers, as this is the group that cannot afford to pay for the current alternatives of drinking water.

Thank you Michael, the business model is clear and generates enough profit to ensure sustainability and scale-up. Production cost per unit is only 16% of the price we charge!
