Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

To feed the expanding world population, more high protein food from sustainable sources and at affordable costs is needed. Yet current protein sources – beef, chicken, fish – are reaching their limits, putting pressure on natural resources, and damaging the environment.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Hargol FoodTech is world's first commercial grasshopper farmer. The company is using technology to grow large quantities of grasshoppers in captivity. Company's optimized methods and technology enable growing several species of grasshoppers quickly and under sanitary conditions for a reliable, sustainable, and quality protein source. Hargol's line of products will include grasshopper protein powder, food additives and pet food.
The Hargol FoodTech difference includes:
• Year-round production – as opposed to limited seasons in the wild – for an ongoing, large supply to meet growing demand
• Superior nutrient content – over 72% protein, all essential amino acids, lipids, Iron, zinc, chitin
• Innovative cage structure for vertical farming enables growing X10 more biomass per m², improved sanitarian conditions
• Optimized feeding – reduces growing costs, improves nutrient content

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

So far Hargol FoodTech demonstrated both superior nutritional content of grasshoppers as well as being a more sustainable protein source:
1. With over 72% protein content, all essential amino acids, high omega-3 & omega-6 and other minerals.
2. About X20 times more efficient than producing beef considering water consumption, feed conversion, GHG emissions, arable land usage and zero waste farming.

Based on early research done in Africa showing grasshopper protein based diet may a have positive impact on children's development Hargol is collaborating with the Hebrew University further researching the issue.

We are also developing a community based grasshopper farms that will provide employment to locals with a focus of empowering women. Hargol's team already presented to African women hosted in Israel by Israel's international development agency MASHAV.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Hargol FoodTech raised funds from international VCs investing in food of the future and impact investors investing in solutions for developing countries challenges.
The company is raising another round of funding to increase its production capacity and turn its activity profitable and sustainable on the long term.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Hargol's founders have been working on individual initiatives to improve humans conditions: Dror Tamir was working on his venture Plate my Meal to prevent obesity, Chanan Aviv was working on developing insect farming for the beneficiary of humans and Ben Friedman was working on better source of nutritional supplements.
We heard about each other work and set a meeting face to face. 5 minutes into that meeting we already knew that we found the right partners to work together and that we are going to build a company that will grow grasshoppers to feed people across the globe.
