Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

CFSK’s main objective is the establishment of an information-rich Kenyan Society actively participating in equipping schools and communities in Kenya that are neglected in ICT provision. We are trying to address the problem of lack of ICT equipment, lack of ICT software and access skills, lack of IT hardware repair and maintenance skills and accumulation of E-waste that is harmful to the environment.We believe this area has the potential for jobs

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Kenya is the leading country in Africa in ICT provision, data and internet. However, there most sections of Kenya still neglected. We believe in equipping schools and community centres with computers and offer training in ICT. Students should interact with computers at an early age. Internet and IT is a leading source of jobs in the world, through, outsourcing, transcription, working on the computer. Most processes by government and private sector have gone online, making those without IT knowledge disadvantaged. Jobs and tender applications and other services have gone online. With increased e-waste, we also do e-waste collection and recycling giving youths jobs. We have done this with Inkisinjani ICT Resource Centre. The Women Group were training to access markets online and increase their earnings. Youths were also trained to repair electronics and in IT packages to get income

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

In environmental impact, e-waste is becoming a menace worldwide due to unsafe dumping, hence our e-waste programme which involves awareness, collection, refurbishment and recycling helps to rid the environment off harmful chemicals that would have been dumped. For Social Impact, CFSK's work brings people in the community together, harnesses cohesion. The work also creates livelihoods through income and sustainability programs. The youth and women are able to get online jobs, they are also able to expand their markets and get new markets online. They are also able to get jobs through electronics repair. CFSK has distributed over 350,000 computers, new and refurbished to schools and community centres since inception. Its work has impacted over 4 million lives. It has trained over 45,000 students, teachers and community in Kenya. Over 200 women in groups have reported an increased income

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

The initiative is initially financed through donors, thereafter it is self sustainable and ownership is to the community. The ICT Resource Centre generates income after the set up in form of individual's use of the facility by way of printers, photocopiers and computers. The individuals get trained on getting opportunities and jobs online, writing, transcriptions etc. They then pay a small fees for the continues use of the computers.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

We train on IT Internet and packages with hardware technical skills and also do e-waste recycling

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

This initiative was created as a result of finding out the struggles of the poor in accessing the computer and internet. We had gone to donate books to a rural school, and as is was the norm, one of us had a speech written on a tablet but had the backup on a laptop. When one of us who had been called to deliver the address stepped up, all the students in the school lifted their heads and walked up wondering what that was. It was a shock to us. While in cities, this was the norm, in rural centres people had not interacted with them. At that moment, we decided at that moment that CFSK will be doing computer donation to rural schools and community centres and train them on sustainable means of getting livelihoods through IT.
