Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?
The initiative is addressing the lack of access to water, toilets in urban slums, the use of plastic bags as toilets and open defecation largely happening among the 70% of the growing population of 3 million people in Kampala, Uganda
The project is targeting the aspect of these problems, because they are the leading causes of millions of women, children and youth dying as a result of diseases such as cholera, typhoid.

JOELEX makes water, sanitation accessible and affordable for the urban poor in Kampala, Uganda by building, operating toilets, showers, waste to water treatment plants and water technologies with the aim of converting waste into water that can be used for both domestic and drinking purposes within urban slums and markets.
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work
With the operations of JOELEX well over a year now, from the inception of our operations, we have witnessed hundred's, thousands of women, children and youth that come to use our toilets, showers and water technologies every single day. On average 100-1000 women, children and youth access these water and sanitation services every single day.
The numbers of people that need these water and sanitation services are overwhelming especially among the urban poor, the women, children are in dire need and numbers keep increasing to moe than our facilities can accommodate.
With the human waste being converted into water, that can be used for both domestic and drinkable purposes, the environment is being safeguarded through reduction in issues of open defecation, use of plastic bags as toilets and thus curbing of green house gas emissions that destroy the environment.
Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?
With our current business model, we estimate the 60% of our annual budget will come from earned income and increase as the months pass by.
This can be explained by the fact that from just one sanitation facility, with the water technologies we an are averaging $200- $400 per day, if we an then raise funding for 50 facilities, we would make at least $15,000 per day and efficiently run the enterprise, the other 40% would come form grants, gifts

The waste to water treatment plant and the SE 200 community chlorine maker,differ from others.
Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.
My inspiration oddly did not start with global health issues; it started with the fight against climate change. I am a certified World Bank Low Emissions Investment Planner for developing countries. My main role as a climate change advocate is to create awareness, educate, and provide solutions to climate change by promoting the use of climate smart technologies.
My passion to combat climate change drove me to look at the proper mechanisms for human waste management, extracting water from that waste stream, and only then were my eyes opened to the pressing need for sanitation facilities for the urban poor.
Now my priorities are to solve the sanitation issue, while harvesting water that can be used for both domestic and drinking purposes
