Mexico: 53 Food Banks located at 27 states working at 4,614 communities. Some cities: Puebla, Tapachula, Tuxtla Gutierrez, San Cristobal, Xalapa, etc.
Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?
Food loss and waste (and its environmental impact), lack of diet variety on malnourished children, families and communities living in food shortage conditions.
Every single day in Mexico, more than 55 thousand tons of edible food are lost or wasted and 1.2 Mexicans die -1 in very 4 people in our country is malnourished-. BAMX's model supports three hundred thousand children every year with an intervention model that aims to have healthier families, self-sustainable communities and a less polluted country.
Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?
Providing high quality rescued food -using a cost-effective food rescue operating model- to children, their families and communities with a nutrition education basis approach.Feeding children and families is the basis, but a healthy development and self-sustainable state are also part of the intervention model through different programs.
Mexico’s Food Bank Network is collaborating with the global agenda supporting four of the sustainable development goals (1, 2, 12 -12.3-, 17). Alliances with manufacturers, consumer-facing businesses, government and other ONG's result in a reduction of food loss and waste through the Food Banks Network: 57 thousand tons of perishable food is been rescued from crop fields each year and there is also a program (Al Rescate) focused on rescuing cooked food at hotels and restaurants , resulting in more diet diversity (protein and others) for children beneficiaries and their families. BAMX is rescuing food from all posible channels, so the impact is larger.

*More than 1 million people have healthier lives and communities can also achieve a self-sustainable state through strengthening / educational programs; within the different nutritional programs:
*Anual BAMX’s food rescue helps to save water: the equivalent of the content of more than 5,500 olympic pools.
*Nutrition for Farmers program in alliance Nestlé Mexico anemia levels have decreased among children population. In some of the cities with the program, the group of age 6 months - 5 years, anemia has been eradicated.
*Feeding malnourished children program with the support of Feed My Starving Children Foundation helps to increase their diet variety. Packages have been balanced with perishable and non-perishable food. Food groups such as dairy, protein, grains and others are now available to malnourished children, their families and communities.
*With the rescue food, BAMX has avoided millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions are produced.
Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?
Mexico's Food Banks Network annual budget comes from:
62% Corporate contributions
12% Individual donations
22% Recovery fees from the active food banks. Each food bank ask the beneficiaries for a recovery fee that, according to the law will never exceed 10% of its commercial value. This adds value to the food in donation and it also strengthening the sense of dignity of every person we take care of. This recovery fee is shat makes possible that food banks are self-sustainable.
Some of the projects have a revolving fund model such as Kellogg’s program to rescue food from the farm to the fork.
There are some national agreements with some allies to reduce operative expenses and BAMX's team has a structured fundraising / procurement plan to ensure financial sustainability.
Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?
BAMX’s model is a virtuous circle, it is a collaborative way of creating share value: food rescue = less pollution and more children and families increasing diet variety = healthier communities learning and implementing self-sustainable lifestyle = promising futures built.
BAMX's advantages: ability to make successful alliances, accountability to stakeholders, active role of the beneficiaries (they are part of their own development),effective results of the nutritional activities on children.
Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.
We have “Aha” moments almost every single day. With our work we aim to reduce food loss and waste and also to feed more malnourished children and families.
The first “Aha” moment: Was back in 1995 when our founder realized that all the produce he wasn’t going to sell and was about to throw out was needed desperately by a group of senior citizens at a retirement home.
More recently: In 2013 when we decide to grow food rescue from the farm at a significant rate. BAMX’s team decided to include temporary job program (already part of the government policy) to negotiate more donations from crop fields in order to hire farm workers. We prepared a presentation of our impact and results and invite one of the governors to be part of the solution. More than 50 million tons of food from farm have been rescued and more than 8 thousand people have been part of the temporary job program.
