Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

The use of a retention screen in the form of a absorbent / fertilizer mat comprehensively solves the problem of improving water availability (increasing soil retention) and more efficient ecological fertilization with the use of natural fertilizers incorporated into the mat (compost, manure, clay, limestone, straw, ...). An absorbent / fertilizer mat made of natural ingredients limits the amount of plastic waste. The technology allows gradual release of nutrients and reduces excessive evaporation of water from the soil.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Technology increases soil retention by capturing and collecting water in the absorbent layer of the mat, directly in the area of ​​the root system of the plant (an overgrowth of the reptile). The purpose of the mat is to compensate for the humidity in the crop area, which allows for more efficient use of organic and mineral fertilizers. By slowing the subsurface flow and surface evaporation and over-evaporation of water from the soil surface, nutrients are efficiently absorbed by plants and water through the plant root system, which surpasses the absorbent mat. At the end of the growing season, the absorbent mat is spread in the soil and the remaining residues are crushed and dispersed using a depth, plow, cultivator or other machine to work at a certain depth, while enriching the soil with organic and mineral substances with high cariesing potential. The final result leads to 100% biodegradation of the mat. Mat participates in soil biochemical processes -support of soil-forming proces

Social impact: The project assumes the introduction of a new form of farming based on the combination of water retention systems with fertilization of crops. The solution affects the better use of labor and land resources. The project generates water and fertilizer savings while producing high quality food. The production of organic fertilizer in the form of absorbent / fertilizer mats from raw materials and organic waste produced on the farm can affects the growth of agribusiness, creating new jobs. Local market is being developed by introducing new products / services. Environmental impact: The use of natural absorbent materials increases soil retention and improves water balance. The use of natural fertilizers reduces the use of fertilizers. The introduction of screens perpendicular to the direction of water flow into the soil profile limits soil erosion and excessive drying. The use of biodegradable mats minimizes the formation of plastic waste and affects the soil-forming process

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

The project is implemented by Grzeslaw sp. z o.o. (The leader of the consortium - EPI Innovation Group) and a member Alina Gromadzka farm group. The author of the solution Slawomir Gromadzki is a co-founder (share of 50 % ) and member of the board of Grzeslaw (capital company) and a farm representative. The consortium carries out projects through the support of the polish Rural Development Program (EU funds) and through current activities (construction services). Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

Not used yet combined water retention system, reducing evaporation and fertilizing crops. The retention screen is built exclusively from natural, organic substances. The technology can be used in both row and field crops. Retentive screens can be inserted into the soil profile either in the form of a fertilizer mix or in the form of a absorbent mat (fertilizer substance is protected by a natural fiber web / fabric). Retention screens are fully biodegradable, initiating soil-forming processes.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

The author of the project Sławomir Gromadzki has been doing research and development on innovative technologies in agriculture, hydrology and agro-food processing and social innovations for many years. In 2016, together with a partner decided to set up an operating group for innovation and GRZESLAW company, which aims to develop and implement projects like "research and development". The idea for the retention screens project was made in response to the drought in Poland in 2015. After presenting the idea at the Agriteq in Doha, Qatar, it was decided to develop the technology and showcase at the Green Expo. At present we are looking for a partner who will support the project in order to popularize it and implement it on a market scale. The Grzeslaw operating group is also involved in the research project on the new technology of packing of feed and technology of retention cascade.
