Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

Inspite of water being one of the key elements of survival, in Bangladesh 39.9 million people do not have have access to clean and safe drinking water. Out of this almost 10 million people do not have access to water at all. Shishir Water exists to solve this crisis by ensuring supply of clean and safe drinking water at the doorsteps of the people who are suffering from water crisis.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Today 1 out 5 people are deprived from access to safe and clean drinking water. Shishir Water is an attempt to turn this crisis into an opportunity and pull and end to it in a sustainable way. Access to safe drinking water can improve health and well being of our communities, bring kids to school and create work opportunities. By establishing plants in needy communities Shishir Water collects water from natural sources (preferably river) and purifies it using world's first UV-LED water cleaning solution produced by Watersprint AB, Sweden. The purified water is then delivered at rural households in a 20 liter jar for consumption which costs USD 0.006 per liter. One of the most amazing parts of Shishir is the way we run our plants. Shishir works with an innovative micro franchising model where the franchisee is supported with access to capital other than technology, strategy, legal and marketing support. This unique franchising model ensures financial sustainability for the company.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

Shishir is a social business project currently under development. This project is currently active in Mymensing and it purifies the surface water from river Bramhaputra using D4Field unit developed by Watersprint AB, a Swedish company to avail clean potable water to the poor population of certain contamination affected areas of Bangladesh. Our focus is to ascertain the effectiveness of the technology and ensure a sustainable business model.
As an impact project, our first plant currently aims to ensure sustainable supply of safe water for consumption for more than 1600 lives and we have already created 6 jobs. We believe access to drinking water is a basic human rights and we want to ensure that our communities receive what they deserve. Shishir addresses Global Goals no 06 and addresses gender equality because women are prone to even greater risks related to hygiene dependent on water.
Success of the pilot project will lead to the deployment of 9 similar water treatment plants

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Shishir Plants requires an initial investment to buy the necessary components to get the plant running. Once this is achieved, a portion of the total capacity of the water is then supplied to the target customers at cost because that is the only way they can afford it on a continuous basis.
However, since sales at-cost does not allow for any of the overhead costs, we arrange for those through cross subsidization, i.e. we sell the rest of the water at a high premium. This premium supply is of the exact same quality and is sold to customers who can afford it such as businesses, restaurants, schools and hospitals.
This premium also contains the portion of funds needed to payback to payback the initial investment. This cross subsidization model helps us achieve sustainability for each plant

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

There are a couple of factors which makes this initiative different from others.
Firstly, Shishir Water uses world's first UV-LED water cleaning solution produced by Watersprint AB, Sweden, which utilizes both filters and maintenance free UV LED system removing particles and biological contaminants without using chemicals.
Our unique micro franchising model make the plants financially sustainable.
Incredibly low pricing ($ 0.0006 per litre) has made water available for the needy communities

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Shishir started though conversations one simple topic, ’People weren’t getting clean water to drink. And a keen party alongside YY Goshti on this topic was WaterSprint AB, a company based out of Lund, Sweden who make UV based water purification solutions. The discussions had gone on about the pressing water access issues in Bangladesh, and WaterSprint AB was more than excited to help.
However, Shishir wasn’t exactly the result of blind luck or accidentally stumbling onto a solution. This was the result of an international collaboration between about half a dozen people with a dire need to find a solution to a problem that wasn’t going away. The technology, as always, was there. But it took real grit and by the water experts of WaterSprint AB and the business minds of YY Goshti to bring this solution within reach of the underprivileged.
