Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?
Though the sanitation sector is very crowded with demand-only actors, few organizations also integrate supply chain improvements. The fragmentation of the sanitation market results in poor access, availability, affordability, and awareness of quality products and insufficient variety for different customer situations and aspirations. Svadha is focused on improving this situation in Odisha and Bihar which have 22 million addressable households.
Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?
Svadha is organizing the fragmented sanitation value chain and providing access to a variety of quality, affordable, and sustainable sanitation solutions through innovation and aggregation, an entrepreneur-led (B2B) model, and ICT integration. From end-to-end, Svadha performs product and service innovation using market research and design-thinking, supply chain operations, logistics, direct sales, and service delivery.
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work
Svadha's mission is to be the ecosystem integrator for the fragmented sanitation sector in order to create and sustain jobs for sanitation entrepreneurs and bring the dignity and health benefits of toilet ownership to households. Svadha also provides Svadha Green, waste management products which contribute to environmental sustainability through processing waste more quickly and suppressing disease-causing organisms to prevent groundwater contamination and create compost.
Svadha currently has 400 entrepreneurs and has reached 200,000 end-consumers with sanitation products.
Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?
As a social business, we are built for sustainability and scalability. We generate revenue from product and service sales across our three sales tiers – mostly to our entrepreneurs. Svadha has grown rapidly; the revenue growth between 2016 and 2017 was 190%. In the most recent fiscal year, Svadha reached ~$300,000 USD annual revenue. As Svadha has been growing to reach economies of scale, 60% of the budget is covered by revenue and 40% by grants.
Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?
Market : quality, variety, convenience
