Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

The TEUK SAAT 1001 project, since 2007, we provide an innovative, efficient and cost-effective solution to or local social entrepreneur to produce safe drinking water (2L /day /person) that can significantly improve rural community’s health and views itself as a complementary approach to water and sanitation infrastructure projects. We support the local entrepreneur produces and distribute safe-drinking water locally within their villages.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

Since 2007, TEUK SAAT 1001 has been pioneering a bottom-up social business approach using low cost technology to provide safe water at an affordable price to the poorest populations (water-treatment kiosk system). The initiative relies on key principles: - Water quality: The system purifies water that is available locally (mainly surface water) with very light infrastructure (detailed in the figure below). The purified water is delivered to the beneficiaries’ homes in 20L containers, which are disinfected and sealed, thereby guaranteeing water quality at the point of consumption. A rigorous treatment process ensures water quality according to national and international standards. Monthly controls are performed in the NGO laboratory and twice a year at the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy. - Accessibility: This starts by providing water at an affordable price for the poor.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

As of July 2017, 10 years after the launch of the first activities, the project enables 400.000 people in the rural area of Cambodia to drink safe water every day including 100,000 children at school. This performance is achieved thanks to the work of more than 500 local entrepreneurs and operators running Teuk Saat1001’s water-treatment kiosks. As the model relies on surface water, the initiative can address both types of challenges: bacteriological contamination of surface water - by treating it -and arsenic groundwater contamination - by relying on treated surface water as an alternative. The water is safe to drink, so no need to boil which can avoid carbon emissions. The project also indirectly benefits many more people through the awareness sessions and social marketing actions which are undertaken in each village.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

Teuk Saat business model is based on two major revenue streams: - engineering fees (or service fees). Today, such fees are mostly paid by donors for setting up new production sites, - assistance fees (along with some margin on the consumables sold to the sites), which are paid by the operating sites, in exchange of various services (supply chain, quality control, coaching) performed on their behalf (franchise-like model).

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

We develop the social franchise to the local entrepreneurs to ensure the sustainable project.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

Teuk Saat is the story on an encounter between Chay Lo, a young Cambodian student and Virginie Legrand who had enrolled for a year with the NGO “Enfant du Mekong” in Cambodia to set up one of the first secondary schools in Phnom Penh for disadvantaged children. After graduating, he was offered the opportunity to go work for a major French group but chose to go back to his country to help rural villages such as the ones he grew up in access safe drinking water. After running a few prototypes in 2005 and 2006 with partner organizations, Chay Lo created “Teuk Saat 1001” in 2007. Locally registered as a Cambodian NGO, Teuk Saat rapidly developed. It now employs 68 peoples.

I really liked your idea, the business side seems to be very well developed. However, I didn't really understand the technological innovation side, that is, the technical aspects of water purification, production, etc. Where does the water come from (groundwater? wells? rainwater? etc)? How do you guarantee that it is safe for drinking?
