Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?

2 out of 5 children under 5 yrs are undernourished & 1 out of every 3 children are malnourished below 14 years in India. We researched various nutritional linked initiatives but didn’t find a direct product/ solution. Mid-day school meals in India has its challenges & controversies. Also in rural India, farmer producer organisations growing organic crops don’t have sustainable income for their produce. Problem addressed is filling gap for child’s nutrition & providing sustainable income to farmer’s organic products.

Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?

We have developed a nutritious bar catering to basic nutrition required for a growing child equivalent to almost a meal. Our perfect bars are easy to transport, distribute, monitor and quality products mitigate failures of mid-day meal schemes in India. We started by working in our region with organic farm producer organisations to source all our ingredients ensuring we provide sustainable income to them. We also train and hire more women in our organisation with capacity support and credit micro-loans. We make our bars that are 70% certified organic & 95% local produce. Currently, we are selling the bars commercially to be sustainable & donate bars for undernourished children through non-profit partners working with poor schools by using our future profits or raise grants. Given the complexities of making nourishing food accessible to malnourished & undernourished children, we found our bars very effective in managing & monitoring the impact on child’s health.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work

We currently work with 3 organic farm produce organisations directly to source our bar ingredients, creating livelihoods for more than 450 farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu region of India. We also work with 3 beekeepers directly in Karnataka for our other products. All our ingredients are ethically sourced. We employ 5 women workers and total 10 employees in our company with fair wages and micro-credit loans. We have currently 500 recurring customers monthly with 30 new customers every month. Our current aluminium foil packaging of our bar is completely recyclable. We are currently developing a better sustainable packaging of the product that can be recycled easily to avoid any trash after eating the bar. We intend to integrate all parameters of sustainability that is measurable from our product to company operation.

Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?

20% Individual donations/ gifts & 80% earned income. We will continue to have a for-profit business model, raising capital for equity and debt to expand and grow our business. This will allow us to allocate a percentage of our profits for our perfect bar project. We will separately raise grants, corporate contributions that will help us to distribute our bars to more poor schools and NGO partners. Corporate The growth of our commercial business will ensure the sustainability of our nutrition project with the support of other donors. We don’t want to depend too much on external grants to execute our project however, we will focus on grants from Corporate CSR and individual donors.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?

UVP of perfect bar brings ease in transportation, distribution & monitoring in poor schools and regions as a more innovative alternative to mid-day meals scheme in India. The bar contains required nutrition & an organic product with no added preservatives or chemicals. We are building a sustainability driven company measuring social, economic & ecological impact. As our company grows, we will continue to work only with organic farm producers to ensure sustainable livelihoods for rural farmers.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.

We worked in the education sector through a project called Poorna Kaksha that designs school infrastructure for poor schools in India. We discovered the gaps in nutrition & mid-day meal failure on the ground. While the founder, Huda was developing the bars for business, we saw a great opportunity of the perfect bar developed specially for children adding value to the nutrition challenges faced in this sector, children who are undernourished and malnourished. The founder has been doing research in child's nutritional needs, challenges in access to nutriton in India given its socio-cultural & economic complexities. She has also been closely studying the systemic flaws in packaged food, lack of awareness, how to interpret nutritional needs in packaged foods. The co-founder, Achyutha focused on challenges in nonprofit and education sector, possible ways to execute our model in the sector.
