Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?
The project seeks to avoid water-borne diseases caused by interrupted access to drinking water. The communities have old water supply systems that experience severe damage during heavy storms. This conditions force the population to drink water from the nearby rivers. These rivers usually receive wastewater, stormwater runoff, and by-products from agricultural activities. Even though the rivers are able to dilute these contaminant flows, the water does not meet drinking standards.
Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?
We consider that the filters are a simple and effective technology that can be easily operated by women in the community. According to the seller, the filters have a life span of 5 years, which is acceptable for a short-term response to the issue.
The integrated water supply plan is the most comprehensive way to evaluate the current conditions of the water systems, plan for the future, integrate the vision of the community, cost out solutions and obtain a written document that can be manipulated by community leaders.
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work
This year, Global Shapers conducted a pilot project in one of the communities named Ipeti Emberá. The objective of this pilot was to confirm the acceptability and effectiveness of using water filters in the community. We provided 100 filters and a one-day training on how to use them. This pilot was carried out in partnership with Global Shapers Cartagena and Waves for Water. Recently we conducted a survey in the community that demonstrated that the population that have received the greatest benefit from the project are the babies in the community. Mothers can give safe drinking water to their child during the most vulnerable stage of its development.
Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?
1. Donations 10%
2. Grants 90%
Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?
Besides providing filters, which is a short-term but effective solution to avoid disseases, our project looks to create an integrated water supply plan. This is the most comprehensive way to evaluate the current conditions of the water systems, plan for the future, integrate the vision of the community, cost out solutions and obtain a written document that can be manipulated by community leaders.
Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.
Global Shapers Panama City Hub was interested in contributing to water access in remote communities in Panama. What we would have never imagined is that one of our team members had to constantly deal with this problem. Learning about her ethnicity and the complex situation that the communities leave with respect to water motivated us to contribute to a solution.
