Problem: What problem is this initiative trying to address?
23 million people in Tanzania do not have access to clean water. Lack of access to clean drinking water is becoming a big challenge that Tanzania is facing today. People have to walk long distances to fetch water which many times is still not pure enough for consumption leading to a lot of diseases. Anga aims to be positioned as a unique product in Tanzania market, invoking elements of purity harvested directly from the atmosphere. The current solutions for water access in Tanzania are through wells, rivers, utilities.
Solution Summary: What is the proposed solution? What do you see as its most promising aspects for creating shared value?
We are tapping into the next biggest resource of water available to us - air. Air is a resource that exists everywhere in the world and contains enough water at any given time to cover the entire surface of the earth several inches. We have created a machine that can convert this trapped humidity in the air into drinking water in a highly economical fashion. Our patented dual stage water filtration technology, along with the best in class filtration system ensures that we produce pure drinking water in the most challenging conditions (low humidity) at high operation points. Our machines on an average perform 8-10x better that competitor machines.
Just like solar panels provide energy independence to consumers, our systems provide water independence to people. The technology is highly scalable and a water factory producing several million liters of water per day can be set up quickly. There is no impact to ecology and thus the entire operation is highly sustainable.
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Specify both the social and the environmental impact of your work
We have tested the water with 500 people, secured stadium supply partnership, 5 LOIs, government approval & free land, First Lady NGO partnership.The expected impacts would be supplying the poor with affordable clean water through our partnership with Tanzania Social Action Fund(TASAF),Equal Opportunities for All Trust Fund,Women In Action and Agape Life Church. Women and girls would have access to pure affordable water which will reduce the amount of time they spend fetching water and take them back to school.
We will ensure to target the poor persons as we have a Water for All business model which means our pricing is to sell affordable water for all consumers.Our strategy to reach the poor through partnerships with TASAF and NGOs by selling water a little bit above costs.We plan to have Anga Days where we have a water collection event for the poor consistently.First year of impact KPIs are:10000 homes, 200 retail outlets, 500 hours saved, and 50 water community and education events
Financial sustainability plan: How is this initiative financially supported? How will you ensure its financial sustainability long-term?
Our project’s technical viability stems from the superior technology that we use in producing massive volumes of pure drinking water.The current technology combined with solar panels and Lithium Ion battery backed system will be less than $0.01 per liter all in cost. With the use of solar panels, to extract water it costs $0.01, and with electricity it costs $0.05. The market rate for bottled water is about $0.35 per liter.We plan to undercut by $0.25-0.30 to make it affordable.

Unique value proposition: What makes your initiative innovative? How does your project differ from other organizations working in the same field?
It provides pure water converted from vapor through unique patented technology in the form of air water generators. Anga intends to achieve 10,000 liters of water extracted per day which will reach about 3,000,000 litres of water per annum and it will target the underprivileged sector with a water for all business model.

Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that sparked the beginning of this initiative.
Few years ago, my brother and I had a vision to set up an orphanage in Dar es Salaam. We also wanted to make it sustainable instead of rely on donors. We did research and through experience found water to be a major problem .So we decided to build a water plant that would generate revenue to solve the water scarcity problem and some funds would support the orphanage. We had a fundraiser for a well, we got the well installed only to not find less water underground and the big water tank was stolen in broad daylight. Fast forward a couple years when we were in business school, we connected with Engineering graduate who was testing a water solution. We realized we had similar passions, dug deeper into research and decided to build a business model for Tanzania. We are tapping into an eternal resource of air to generate water - no company or organization is doing this process in East Africa!
