1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed
Change causes stress. Even positive change is accompanied with loss and grief. The creative journey feels great, but also stressful, lonely, challenging. Imagine if a whole society tries to reinvent itself to become sustainable?
As a designer bound to 2D/3D level work, often outcomes were fixed on production of posters and products. I noticed the design field needed a new approach to serve social needs. People need new skills to work with collective care in stressful processes. With 4D Design and Leadership (4D), I added the time and movement dimension to design work, incorporating the process of change and the human transformation cycle. In this approach I see a great potential for next level design education for future skills.
2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?
In this time of transition and change, young adults, professionals and people in leadership positions in Korea are not well equipped and accommodated to adapt to the stress and grief that arises from (positive and negative) changes. Society and leadership underestimate the impact of change on people. There are hardly any programs that provide a collective learning environment in schools and organizations, risking unemployability due to stress.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
POGKOREA is one of the first companies providing educational and training programs for future design skills in NGOs, businesses, and schools in Korea. The programs are developed for professionals and students to learn about ‘how to be in change’. We design our programs based on the concept of ‘4D Design and Leadership’ (4D). The model grows insight into ‘change processes’ and how to work with leadership, environment, data and strategy to grow collective minds, creating awareness about the collective as a great resource.
To set the long term learning environment, the program provides experiential knowledge, models and tools. Moreover, we are starting a datalab to develop digital tools for the visualization of data that comes from the workshops - offering an individual and collective learning overview. It supports reflecting on self care and collective action by focusing on both a sustainable future (the outcome) and a sustainable present (the change process). This requires a radical shift of perspective! And so it is crucial that people learn these skills in a collective learning environment together with peers/colleagues: this is where the seeds of change find fertile soil.
4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?
During our training, using the 4D process and tools, participants diagnose their own stage of organizational development and their individual struggle with it. The insights of each meeting are archived and turned into quantitative data and pie charts. Based on the data overview, the group starts to learn how to make strategic decisions based on collective minds and care.
Using the 4D way of working creates space for individual hopes and fears to become part of the collective purpose and direction. The tools help bring out stories so they can be heard and anchored in the process. It means that we truly design for collective self-direction to happen, offering space for reality based, innovative solutions to emerge.
5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?
Change starts from individuals and continues with the collective and organizational structures. It is not sustainable to care for change by yourself, whether you raise a child or fight against global warming. We want to foster individual learning to engage with collective minds, care and action. We design visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning environments for people to explore their whole person and their own ‘ground’. This is the baseline data before we dive into potential and creativity. When the givens are clear, it sets the boundaries of the freedom to explore: in the process of sustainable development, goals must be inspiring and realistic.
Our 4D workshops, program and consulting balance between individual and collective learning, where individual input has a multi-layered purpose in the long term learning to develop organizational strategies based on collective knowledge.
5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress
We are focusing on new design education and 4D skills for the future. In the future, most of the graphic and product-oriented design work will be automated. Gradually, people’s work will shift to designing the intangible - unpredictable processes.
In order to have measurable outcomes, we use 4D learning harvesting tools and reflection reports forms. We are developing a 4D database and digital tool to offer visual learning and an overview of milestones of change. Based on the 4D model, we offer routined learning procedures to integrate individual learning with collective learning.
7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?
Worldwide, the market for collaborative tools is growing. The Korean market for it is valued between 300-500 billion won ($250-415 mln). It is expected to grow because Korean companies want to increase work productivity now that the shorter 52-hour workweek has been introduced. While most existing tools and approaches like Agile and Design Thinking may increase business efficiency, they are not, like 4D, fundamentally intended to solve problems arising from change and peoples’ capacity to cope with change. 4D uniquely focuses on collective learning and care for a sustainable process.
8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
We have worked with frontrunners in change, activists and caregivers in various fields. Our work covers small startups and large corporations. From 2017 about 200 people got collaboration design (4D pilot) workshops, consulting and training. We worked with the Science Walden research center of Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), and at the alternative design school Paju Typography Institute (PaTI). An example of impact is that after the pilot workshop series at PaTI 4D Design became a required subject at the school. An estimated 80% of students use what they learned during our workshops and started to teach the tools to peers to apply them in their own work. Feedback from the students shows that our learning platform improved their collaboration capacity, their awareness of self care and collective care, and their adaptability and collective organizing skills.
9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?
In the short term, our income comes from consulting/education jobs by the founder and a research contract. This year we are applying for external funding to expand our organizational team and to work on products and services with a 4D book publication, content development for the training program and prototyping the Datalab tools.
In the midterm, our training program generates a stable income stream. We will expand our team of consultants/educators. We also apply for research funding to further develop the datalab and its business model.
In the long term, the datalab will be the third diversified income stream. Our team of 4D consultants/educators works worldwide with the datalab tools, generating data that can result in publications.
Providers of Goodness (POG) is registered in Korea and Norway with 2 full time founders. Our POGKOREA founder is a designer, researcher and the 1st Korean Genuine Contact™ trainer. We have an MOU with Dalar International Consultancy (US). Since 2017 POG partnered with designers & students on a project base. This year we aim to expand the team with 5 positions: a datalab developer, a design & online marketing manager, a web designer, a (financial) administration manager and a 4D content developer

As a woman growing up in Korea, having my own business being a leader was never encouraged. Although I was growing up with a liberal family culture, still there were unspoken limits and boundaries. I had to fight for my right to change, to study abroad and plan for my international business to start. By pursuing my dream to grow, share and shine, I continue to strive for care for our society and create job opportunities for women to work on design and innovation!
