1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed
I have been working in the education space for the last 9 years, since I was 18 and first stepped into a classroom. I have worked on 4 different continents, 10+ countries, with 1000s of students & teachers; most recently as lead for a Global Citizenship Centre in Australia. I worked with the best schools in the world and created transformative change, focusing on future skills like self-discovery and design thinking.
But, I felt unsatisfied. I wanted to create impact for the kids who were "hungry" for change and do it in a SCALABLE way. I wanted to make that personal transformative change happen for EVERY child without losing its impact and by adding technology as a layer.
2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?
We have seen the disconnect between the way that schools prepare students and the demands of the real world. The trends of automation, globalisation, and collaboration are adding to low employability. What we will work on, where we will work, & how we will work have all changed, but the education system has not responded. We are in a crisis of 21st century jobs, 20th century schools, and 19th century skills. We NEED to redesign ed.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Our focus as a product is on future-proofing at scale using technology and curated content. Students undergo a selection process to join Entrepreneurs Academy, a 100 day program to work on themselves and their ideas using our curated content. Month 1, they discover their passion & problem and develop themselves using Emotional Intelligence; month 2, they invent a solution using Design Thinking and conduct user interviews;and month 3, they use Financial Literacy to build their business and run prototypes. Finally they pitch their ideas to win seed money! Throughout, community plays a massive role and they get exclusive mentorship in the AI+ world, learning relevant skills like Entrepreneurial Thinking, Financial Literacy, Design Thinking, Self Awareness, etc. This is the most viable method of securing a future for our students.
4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?
First Mover Advantage: We have built the first product to solve employability by delivering 21st century learning online and getting students to act in the real world. Hyper Community Driven: We meet the GenZ where they live—Online. Our product capitalises on the habits of social media natives to collaborate, comment, and compete in our safe community space. High ROI and Virality: Our students hustle for their ideas in the real world and discover their passion by learning skills and sharing posts on social media, leading to high network effects. Relevant future-of-work Skills: We teach skills that matter in this century and that they are deeply invested in—self discovery, design thinking & financial literacy.
5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?
Students learn to own and build their projects end-to-end. They feel empowered to do 15+ hours of work in the real world by using our app for 15 minutes. 1. Teenagers struggle to talk about how they’re feeling and how to manage their time, and stress. We teach them Emotional Intelligence. 2. They learn how to be entrepreneurial, lead people, and solve hard problems . 3. In the 21st century, we have to network and communicate online. The SoF platform is a safe community to practice sharing ideas respectfully and productively. 4. We help them understand and discover what drives them and how they'd like to change this world, turning their passions into jobs.
5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress
Baseline Quizzes and Mentorship Calls are used to understand their increase in skill level and intent for each of the 4 skills - Entrepreneurial Mindsets, Emotional Intelligence, Financial Literacy and Design Thinking.
6. Financial capability: how is your organization or project creating innovative solutions that arm people with ability to optimize their current and future financial health
In the mini skills of Financial Literacy our students consider topics like Talking about Money, Negotiating, Saving, Budgeting and Investing. Their financial awareness, knowledge and comfort increases rapidly.
6a. Please describe what aspect of financial capability your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress.
In Financial literacy, we evaluate a combination of factors necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve individual financial wellbeing. We have broken it into three key concepts - 1. Financial Knowledge 2. Financial Behaviours 3. Financial Attitudes
7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?
School of Future positions itself in the edtech market for online delivery of skills like, practising entrepreneurship and collaboration in the real world and self discovery. There are no direct competitors in this market who are teaching students social skills online the way we do. The online academic learning market consists of players like Byju’s (Bangalore), Toppr (Bangalore), Mindspark (Ahmedabad), Khan Academy—all of whom target the same market and provide some version of test/exam prep help to students. There are smaller players that run offline workshops on these skills.
8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
We have been able to transform the 17 students we worked with during the first cycle of our product. For example one student, Manish, is committed to working for the community of street vendors and bringing them online. After a series of 42+ interviews with the vendors, he understood how their market has been crushed through the presence of all-utility branded stores. He spent time to make sure he addresses the concerns of street vendors & logistics of bringing a grassroots community to the online user. He developed emotionally, became skilled at design thinking, and honed his entrepreneurial grit in our platform.
9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?
Our students pay for the use of our platform (there are scholarships on offer). We are also fundraising to be able to fuel our growth faster. As our services are mainly delivered online, our costs to scale are fairly low.
