1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed
As a student who uses public transportation daily, we were empathized by the struggle of both the jeepney drivers and operators who provides us with the service that we need in order for us to arrive at our destination. Students study, graduate and start on taking up jobs, but the people who are responsible for taking us to where we need to be don't obtain the progress and improvement on their jobs that they deserve.
2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?
Despite the hard work of jeepney drivers, their earnings don't meet the quota that is enough to sustain their family expenses. We have surveyed jeepney drivers and learned that their income everyday varies depending on the passengers considering that there are a lot of other jeepney drivers that the passengers can ride to. There are even drivers who are in the field for a lot of years and still stay in their line of work despite their low wages.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We would like to provide the jeepney drivers and operators an innovation that could give them another source of income. This mechanism is a charging station that is powered by piezoelectricity from piezoelectric transducers installed in the jeepney seats and a rolling mat. This innovation aims to aid the jeepney drivers and operators additional earnings aside from the fare given by the passengers therefore, could tend the problem of jeepney drivers regarding the low earnings while becoming beneficial not only to the drivers but also to the passengers.
4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?
We made sure to not only consider the benefit of our Target Market, but also the passengers which would be the core users of this project. Moreover, as we offer solutions for the problems of our primary audience, the jeepney drivers and operators, we would also provide them the assurance that this innovation will without a doubt help them since it will also be beneficial to their costumers.
5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?
With this PiezoJeep, Jeepney Drivers and owners would be able to have extra income for their daily living which will help them save their place better in the industry while coping up with the technological advancements regarding the possible phase out of traditional jeepneys and needs of their target market.
7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?
There are also existing charging outlets inside jeepneys and also the invention of powerbank but the main advantage of our proposed project is the use of the piezoelectricity which is under Renewable energy. Instead of charging powerbanks and using fuels to get electeicity, our project is designed to harvest piezoelectricity by the use of the pressure that is applied by the passengers. With this mechanism, we are able to help maintain our environment while providing extra service for both drivers and passengers of the Philippine Jeepney.
8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Our project from being a simple thesis requirement for our school has won second place in the Regional Pitching Competition with the theme, “Innovations for Sustainable Development of SMART CITIES” under the Center for Technopreneurship+ Innovation. It has also been commended by Miss Paula Mills, the founder of Academy of Entrepreneurs based on Australia and was one of the judges and also a delegate speaker during the said competition. We, the proponents of this project had also received an invitation in the incubation program by the Academy of Entrepreneurs last January.
9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?
Regarding the sustainability of our project, during the first few months we are planning to engage with market analysts provided by our trusted individuals to find possible investors to help it grow and innovate. On the other side from the medium and long term run of our project, funding is expected to be gained by the piezojeepney itself for it is made to be franchised and bought by the jeepney operators.
As of now, we are a team composed of 4 members. Me being the head of the team and 3 co researchers being the finance,circuit and market heads simultaneously. We also have our adviser, Doc Jed Tolentino our adviser to handle professional matters for us.
