1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed
Our team comes from electronics manufacturing services background. As a part of the PPP with GOI in June 2012, our company adopted an “Industrial Training Institute’ in Dodamarg,in Maharashtra state. As a Chairman of the ITI Management Committee (IMC), I was surprised to notice that the students in ITI were being taught age old technology of “Repair of CRT TV”. By 2012, top big brands in India had already stopped manufacturing and selling CRT TVsin India. The same was brought to the notice of the Director of Vocational Education in Maharashtra. The Aha moment for us, was when we develop the 1st curriculum of its kind in India to train a technician on Panel TV repair. Our endeavour was supported by team members from Sony, LG and Onida.
2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?
We wanted to change the social ill, an old school of thought that “Worker to remain worker throughout his working lifespan”. With this mindset and tricky Indian labour laws, there is no focus around Vertical Mobility for this category of workforce. This problem is further compounded by Automation and low skilled processes, most of the companies rely of contractual labour with low skills requirement.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We have identified 4 pillars of “In demand future skill sets”, these are:
i) Technical Skill set i.e. relevant for at least foreseeable future (10 years)
ii) Opportunity of transition from Blue Collar to White Collar with sustainable rising wages
iii) Opportunity to become entrepreneur
iv) International Placement opportunity
4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?
We have developed unique “SkillsD Model” collaborative model with partners including:
a. Government including Ministry of Skill Development, Ministry of Rural Development
b. CSR Donors Partners
c. Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) for B Voc certification
d. National Skill Development Corporation for Skill Certification
e. Corporates for Apprenticeship
We have blended the short-term skilling programs funded by Government/CSR Donor Partners with unique work integrated skilling program of TISS leading to graduation for our students. For aspiring candidates we have further mentoring them with Entrepreneurship development program and for those willing to go abroad for them arranging sessions in specific technical skills and placement

5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?
When we take a youth from economically weaker section of society.
The first challenge is to make the candidate employable using funds from Government schemes/CSR grants etc.
Second, step is to impart them with degree/diploma where he/she can work as intern and gain stipend to support his/her living and studies.
Third step is to equip the candidate with skills that are in high demand in the country or abroad to help them earn good. Or Mentor the aspiring ones to become entrepreneur.
5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress
a. Short term skilling: skill sets completely in short period of 3 to 5 months with NSQF Level 4 through this training makes them competent to take up support job role and command stipend of 8 K to 9 K per month.
b. Long Term Skilling: Of these candidates, who have completed their class 12th, we enrol candidates in the work integrated program of TISS. Their progression on completion is as follows:
Yr 1: Diploma (NSQF Level 5)
Yr 2: Advanced Diploma (NSQF Level 6)
Yr 3: B. Voc. Degree (NSQF Level 8)
7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?
Most of the institutions working in this domain are working as academic institutions with little or no industry interface. Our strength is our own background of running a manufacturing unit and hence on ground challenges. Further, since it is a long-term intervention it needs extreme patience, investment and not very exciting on numbers/scale to start with. However, Funfirst has invested 5 serious years and with reasonable success and ready to go.
8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Till date we have enrolled around 2000 candidates of whom 914 candidates are active, around 386 have graduated and around 600 dropped out. Of the candidates graduated:
i) Placement rate @ salary of > 1.8 lacs per annum is around 88%
ii) Average salary is around 18 K
iii) None of the guys employed are in Blue Collar
9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?
Our project needs investment of around INR 20 K per candidate for the initial short term course. This is currently subsidized by Government, CSR donor and candidate. We are looking at reducing the same to INR 10 K per candidate and charge the same to the candidate. The long-term part is self-sustainable as the candidates pays his/her fees.
We have extremely passionate team of around 100 team members led by business heads across various roles that include:
1) Developing content and training pedagogy (aligned and updated with market needs)
2) Mobilisation team for candidate’s
4) Placement team
5) IT team
We intend to be present in 100 smart cities and 10 Electronics Manufacturing Clusters in next 5 years.
