1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed

Judy Frater my mentor, started KalaRaksha Vidyalaya in the year 2003 with the support of Ashoka Fellowship. I started my first steps towards the development sector with SBI Youth for India Fellowship. During my fellowship, I had realised the importance of fighting poverty and provide livelihoods as a foundation to build on the other SDG's. I started working in the crafts sector - Barefoot College, My work there made me realise that there was something wrong with how craft-based organisations are approaching the problem at hand. My search for an alternative lead me to Judy Frater in the year 2017, Post which I have made it my personal goal to see that the depth of her work forms the foundation on which craft organisations are based on.

2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?

Design education (not training) for artisans is the most innovative and genuine strategy towards solving the problem at hand. I believe that once you identify a problem, you should work on two important things, one is the short term goals which are to generate income and livelihood opportunities and the second is to work towards a long term goal in which the problem and the organisation thus formed becomes obsolete. I am concentrating on later.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

I am currently taking forward from Judy Frater as the Director of Somaiya Kala Vidya. What she has achieved during her time with the craft communities is tremendous and very inspiring. Taking her work as the foundation and base, I am planning to propagate the idea of design education for artisans. The Artisan to Artisan outreach program to take the designers from Kutch to first Bagalkot and then to Avani Kumaon has been impactful. Taking parts of that and adding my own knowledge and skills as an engineer and entrepreneur to build these independent projects into self - sustainable organisations is the goal. I like analogies and would want to explain the same with one. The tree - Somaiya Kala Vidya has grown and is providing an inclusive growth environment for the artisan-students, I am taking the seeds from it to different parts across the country, starting with Ladakh. The seed will grow out to be a completely different tree depending on the weather conditions, soil quality and the water and minerals that were given. Some trees will survive and some won't. The idea is to plant as many trees as possible in my lifetime for the idea to propagate and survive.

4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?

The idea is to not only provide education but also provide the communities with access to digital and management tools to be able to learn on managing and running their own enterprises. I strongly believe that education could be common but the understanding of the same to a group/ to a community increases manifolds as everyone adds their own layer. This is the unique approach, building cooperative organisations that are formed on strong relations and collaborations and realising the true potential of Humans through it. SKV's outreach in Bagalkot Karnataka inspired the artisans to come out with an innovative method that reduces there time to weave by a few hours. This is our aspiration for the projects we are about to undertake.

5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?

Through our organisation and the project that I am about to undertake, the idea is to build our students into micro-entrepreneurs by making education relevant to them and their traditional knowledge. The idea is to not teach them the skills they already possess but to teach them how to use that as a foundation to build on and add layers of skills and knowledge to maximise and realise their true potential. The graduates of SKV have become financially sustainable using the design course as an underlying concept. They are self-confident and are deeply motivated to grab on new opportunities and also to use technology and web to further their products and work.

5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress

The course offered at SKV is divided into 6 modules and develops artisans into micro-entrepreneurs. We develop self-confidence, intrapersonal skills, understanding of their traditions, understanding of the market SKV based on this has developed a 3-year artisan to artisan project to develop the same for idea replication. My additional layers are to make these independent projects self-sustainable by assisting in formation of cooperatives and providing with management and digital tools.

7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Somaiya Kala Vidya is the only institute that provides education (not training) to the artisans and believes in it.

8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Over the last 14 years of existence of Kala Raksha Vidyalaya and Somaiya Kala Vidya, We have impacted close to 200 artisans mostly from Kutch region but also from Karnataka and Uttarakhand. The Artisan to Artisan program has specifically created confidence in artisans in Karnataka and Uttarakhand fostering change and instilling confidence and pride in their designs and work. There has been a drastic change in their income generation and has helped them in providing job opportunities to others from their own communities. We have an impact assessment of our work in progress done by Priyatej Kotipalli - PhD and would love to share the same with the team s it comes to us. The assessment would be predominantly on a qualitative perspective.

9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

In the short term, we are seeking funds, I have attached a proposal for the same as an additional document above. In the long term, The cooperatives would help their individual projects become self-sustainable.

10. Team

Lugu Ladakh is a team of young enthusiastic change-makers working with the carpet weavers of Ladakh. The team has a combined experience of business development, textile design, marketing and branding and a lot of local perspective about Ladakh and the craft sector. They have been working on the ground and understanding the requirements of the current project. SKV will build such teams for every project we would undertake in different regions across the country.
