1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed

TUMO is a new kind of educational model that puts students in charge of their own development. Thousands of teens between the ages of 12 and 18 come to TUMO after school to learn the latest in technology and design. At TUMO, students not only gain the skills imperative to success in the 21st century, but also broaden their horizons and find guidance on their paths toward professional and personal excellence. Right after the center was opened, the idea of Camp TUMO summer program was born and it went live immediately in 2012. A significant part of the project is the involvement of kids living in the border villages of Armenia who have no access to any TUMO branch which is accomplished with the support of different sponsors.

2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?

Recent statistics show the unemployment rate in Armenia to be almost 18%. It can be explained by lack of proper education and appropriate skills. TUMO Center took this high responsibility to take care of technology related education which is provided to the younger generation of Armenia. Especially teens living in distant areas of Armenia are in need of the future skills, as it takes time for the new technologies to get there.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

The solution is one: Education! What TUMO desires and rapidly approaches to it, is opening as many branches as possible in the territory of Armenia and outside its borders, so there's no single teenager left out without technology or design skills. But before that, to save time and be productive, we raise funds from different sponsors; individuals or companies, and spend on hosting as many kids from villages as possible at Camp TUMO for at least one week. This gives them an overall idea to understand current trends of technology and design, to get an insight of future profession. We are always in need of sponsors who share our vision and are ready to support us in our initiative. Another essential investment in the lives of village kids is the interaction with peers from all over the world; daily conversations, same routine, working on one project together. This broadens their worldview, expands their outlook, develops self-confidence and courage which are the milestones on their way of becoming educated individuals.

4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?

The TUMO educational path is our in-house software, with a specially designed interface that allows users to create their personal learning plan. Our software adapts and evolves according to the pace and preference of every student. At TUMO, there is no certificate of completion. Instead, as students progress on their learning paths, completing projects and leveling up, they build a portfolio of results that becomes their living diploma. As an example, we have several students who are already 24-26 years old and they still study at TUMO. Some of them have separated into different projects and create their own ideas. Same for Summer Camp TUMO. We offer them available workshops, they choose the ones they desire and here you go!

5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?

As already mentioned in the point 4 above, TUMO provides alternative education to teenagers by giving them the freedom to learn on their own. At TUMO there are no entrance requirements, no fees, exams, grades, class cohorts, school years and diplomas. All this is resulting in inclusiveness, optimizing potential, maximizing learning in technical and professional skills, and entrepreneurial mindset. At Camp TUMO summer program we put a stress on three important components: professional skills in 10 different learning subjects, working on one project with a team and leading self-created program. Those are the fundamentally important keystones for being competitive as an expert in the chosen profession, an ideal team player and a leader.

5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress

There are 14 learning targets that the TUMO program is built around. To name a few; Animation, Game Development, Photography, Robotics, Web Design, etc. The educational process itself is a form of assessment that consists of self-learning activities, workshops and learning labs. All those three stages follow one another and are conveniently designed for evaluation and measurement. Successful completion of self-learning activities grants students access to workshops of their choice, which in its turn opens up doors for a learning lab led by industry specialists from around the world.

7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Swiftly looking through the other innovations suggested, I can mention "Kodluyoruz", that finds the way to obtaining future skills through proper education. However, the way TUMO approaches to this problem is far more thorough, as we provide innovative education to teens, who are from 12 to 18 years old, who still need to perceive the importance of it and have much longer time to find the right direction in their future career. There are several other proposals that are concentrated on education, but still, Camp TUMO is unique as an initiative of offering freedom of self-learning.

8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

As a matter of fact, Camp TUMO summer program was and still is the project which puts on top the education of kids, the schoolchildren, who could never realize in their lives that they would be granted this opportunity of getting free of charge innovative education! It is growing fastly and penetrating into the lives of border village kids, who strive to be the lucky one to get to the one-week summer program. So far, Camp TUMO hosted more than 1500 campers, and this was absolutely a life changing experience for them. Instead of sitting home or walking around, they open their eyes and minds to their future, to the desired tuition and job. The idea of the project lies deep in the roots of growing up kids, making them understand the current trends, making the impossible possible. Our further plan is to raise the number of kids year by year and be sure there's no one left out.

9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

The Camp TUMO summer program operated under the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies. The location is TUMO, the workshop leaders are TUMO workshop leaders, campers spend their at TUMO. The long term financial sustainability plan is to become an independent self-sustainable project, to which we go gradually, step by step. Until then, Camp TUMO needs to complete the mission of engaging a larger number of kids from distant regions. As soon as it's done, we'll move smoothly forward to making the project international. We are always open to teens from all over the world, however we need to increase the number. So far, we had 28 participating countries which is already a positive number.

10. Team

As far as the Camp TUMO program is situated in the TUMO Center, it works together with the TUMO team. 10 workshop leaders conduct the camp workshops, the camp coordinator and the coordinator assistant create the program, follow up and control the smooth process of implementation. During the 8 weeks of the camp program, 5-10 volunteers are hired as counselors. Along with development, we plan to stand out as a fully self-sufficient program and grow the team accordingly.
