Our story started in 2002 when volunteerism started to flourish&youth wanted to be engaged in serving their communities. We dreamed of Egypt to become a better place for the less fortunate by providing long term solutions through empowering them economically. As the team grew, Raghda Ebrashi (founder) decided to legally register AYB in 2005 to have a youth organized structure aimed at empowering each beneficiary to be their own savior by teaching them how to grow&sustain their growth. As the years passed AYB development model has become a well rounded socio-economic empowerment scheme, providing services aimed at all family members of underprivileged communities, enabling each individual to find&utilize their potential to lead a better life.

2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?

69 percent of unemployed people are aged between 15 and 29, & more than 82 percent of those young people held diplomas and university degrees(CAPMAS).This high unemployment rate reflects an ongoing slowdown in economic activities. After studying the unemployment rates in Egypt & the gap between the market demand and unemployed labor, AYB decided to focus primarily on the unemployed with an intermediate level of education.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Micro Business Clinic is offering business diagnostic tools to assess the needs of the micro business owners and requirements for micro business survival and growth. The service is offering a set of tools to assess the business performance in main functional areas such as: Marketing, Operations and Finance Management in addition to the entrepreneurial orientation of the Micro business owners that impact the business survival and growth. The assessment is followed by tailored business development service that include capacity building of the micro business owners through training and mentoring as well as specialized services aiming for increasing market access, access to market information, improvement of supply chain and quality control measures, transition to formal sector and ETC. The business development service is backed up with transaction based financing mechanisms that are matching the needs of the micro-businesses in terms of operational cycles, cash flow, liquidity and profitability.

4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?

Improved, cost-efficient, and comprehensive business support services, targeting MSEs owners, provided via mobile/internet for the first time in Egypt. Increased outreach and attracting new borrowers to the micro-finance sector by integrating both human capital and financial investment in MSEs and micro/grass-root entrepreneurs.

6. Financial capability: how is your organization or project creating innovative solutions that arm people with ability to optimize their current and future financial health

Our micro business clinic platform will innovate a current successful service that is being done by the organization; we will build upon the success of our on ground/ face to face Micro Business Clinic and we will transfer it into an online platform where business owners and startups can use the platform in order to provide us with the needed information and requirements about their business through filling in forms and answering questions and accordingly we can start diagnosing the problem and offering a customized solution, multiple services will be provided through the platform like: online sessions, FAQ’s and many other services that are necessary and essential for startups. Our idea shall be simplifying and updating existing processes and therefore we shall be doing core innovation through this platform.

7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Based on the new service concept pilot, it is expected to increase the potential number of borrowers to more than 250% which means about 12,000 new micro-finance clients per year for the organization. It is also expected to decrease bad debt and overhang (or unnecessary financial burden on poor families) by 30%.
