1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed

In 2015, when I moved back home to Iloilo, Philippines. We saw the fast-growing developments and the wealth of potential talent. We explored “blended learning approaches” to education -- a way of teaching that combines various approaches of learning in a way that personalizes education for a learner so he or she can achieve mastery of a certain topic. Education, we realized, is something we really do have a passion for, as well as designing learning experiences and tracking student progress. In an age of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, we became curious about the idea of how we can use technology to personalize and scale learning outcomes. So how can we prepare Filipinos for this innovation and technology-driven world?

2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?

The Philippine economy, although still growing fast, is at risk of being an engine of greater inequality amidst the 4th Industrial Revolution if it does not upskill its citizens, especially the youth. Low aptitudes in reading, science and math are alarming. But given the multidimensional world we have now that blends digital with reality, we need different more innovative ways to train the Filipino to thrive in this VUCA world.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

The key is to equip the Filipino with skills that cannot be automated. These therefore involve the Creative, Cultural, Entrepreneurial, Emotional, People Skills and Mindsets. At SlashIgnite, we have a blended learning academy that teaches Filipinos with entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, Filipino culture, and moral values. Using offline, online and social learning, we provide an experience that trains the whole mind and engages the Filipino to be aware of himself/herself, develop creative confidence and be able to create innovations matter that address the pressing challenges of our time. To date we have run programs with a university on entrepreneurship, creativity and online professional skills. We work directly with schools who want to add more innovative teaching and learning experiences to entrepreneurship and lifelong learning courses. We also offer programs to teachers to help them teach better to a generation of multidimensional thinkers who blur the lines between offline and online.

4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?

We are currently implementing a program at a local university's entrepreneurship program, where we have a blended approach to entrepreneurship education. We get actual entrepreneurs to speak to the class, and we use tech tools to assess the entrepreneurial capabilities of the students, and an algorithm tailor fits a personalized experience by giving them exercises and learning modules based on their assessment, aptitude, interests, etc. At the end of the day, students are able to discover their personal passions and interests, and explore business ideas that can be built out of these. Our community platform also allows students to interact with actual entrepreneurs in our ecosystem thereby fostering a mutual learning experience & mentorship

5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?

In a time that is more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, learning agility is key. And Entrepreneurship and innovation is one way to teach that learning agility. Our company SlashIgnite has a way of bringing multidisciplinary fields and talent to ignite possibility for entrepreneurial and innovative thinking and aptitudes. With our education algorithm and community building platform that can personalize learning experiences, and connect learners with the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, we provide an engaging program to learn with agility and possibly become entrepreneurs and innovators that solve problems for Filipino society.

5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress

We focus on educating for the ability to create innovative ideas, products, services and organizations., centered around Innovation and Entrepreneurship training. We believe this can foster the top 10 skills needed to thrive in the 4th Industrial Revolution (according to the World Economic Forum), such as Complex Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Coordination, Service, etc.

7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There may be many edtech solutions available, but we specialize in entrepreneurship and innovation education for the Filipino learner and linking them with the local entrepreneur ecosystem.

8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

We have partnered with a school, a government agency, nonprofits and a startup studio to run entrepreneurship and innovation training. We tailor our approach to the needs of the learners. For example, in the nonprofit, our students were community members in their farming community. We taught them creative problem solving and social enterprise and matched them with an ecotourism entrepreneur to mentor them as they build their business. Today, the community is still running their successful eco-enterprise and agribusiness as a result of that training and are able to earn six figures from sales of their produce and ecotours.

9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

We are building online learning content on innovation and entrepreneurship which we hope to launch this 2020. This will be offered to schools, organizations and professionals who want to learn. We are also organizing events on entrepreneurship and innovation in our city, especially since we are actively coordinating the innovation ecosystem with our public-private partners. Our business model aims to be from enrolloment fees, and program fees.

10. Team

We are a team of impact driven entrepreneurs and professionals fully embracing our multi disciplinary talents to solve problems. We have one full time, and 3 part time co founders.
