1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed

In the course of our expansive work with schools, students, and educators in India, we learned that many students had negligible exposure to art and culture and the little orientation that was provided often was restricted to the level of annual events. We realized that over the last few decades, the proportion of students receiving arts education had shrunk drastically. When we asked students to share information about their culture and history, we learned that the majority of students lacked knowledge of such things. Despite the fact that we live in the 21st century and we’re evolving every day, there is still very little encouragement and incentive given to students to follow their own passion.

2. The problem: What problem surrounding employability or financial capability are you helping to solve?

The mainstream jobs are decreasing in number and if available, the amount of income is negligible. The sources of income are narrowing down. Youth is not able to generate employment for themselves and hence get involved into quarrels or nuisance. The children living in most remote areas are not exposed to enough resources of income generation, skill training and brain development. Their life is confined to meager jobs with no skill enhancement.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

The live classes are being provided to children living in the most remote areas and in very poor conditions. Thus, the program is provided free of cost to each and every child in every part of the country. The running program would solve the problem of children who are devoid of resources to pursue their dreams and are hence unable to create livelihood for themselves and their families. Due to unavailability of right resources and knowledge, the children lose their path of learning. VIrsa is providing such children with a platform of skill development and career training wherein they are equipped with the right knowledge, skills and tools that can be used to later generate employment for themselves. Virsa has reduced the geographical barriers by reaching to every State and District of India, to every child, through the platform of digital live classes. VIrsa is allowing interaction of children and teachers, daily, on real time basis, providing two-way communication. This enhances the learning abilities of the children, focusing on their holistic development and inclusive growth, and hence creating an environment of job opportunities and opportunities to earn livelihood.

4. How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solving the problem?

The Virsa program, being run, is shrinking the geographical barriers and is able to reach to every part of the country and children living in the most remote areas. Unlike other e-learning platforms, Virsa is providing live-interaction and two-way communication of children and teachers. It is equipping children with skills, tools and knowledge that can be used to generate employment and become a means of livelihood. We are helping the children in getting an exposure to different and alternate ways of earning livelihood, from the mainstream jobs of carpenter, plumber or electrician. This will not only help the children to learn learn skills but will also allow the culture to sustain in the growing world of intolerance.

5. Employability: how is your organization or project teaching people to develop the skills that they need to survive in the future job market?

Virsa has focused to provide alternate skills and knowledge to the children and youth of the country. It is enabling the youth to work in services which are not mainstream but are upcoming and self dependent services. Equipping youth with the skills and knowledge of art and culture will allow them to generate employment opportunities for themselves which will not only make them independent earners but will also make them feel empowered and authoritative. With the right knowledge of performing arts and a blend of mathematics and brain development, the individual will have holistic growth and utopian development. Every child will have independent choice of pursuing their job of interest. Virsa is giving skill development of performing arts to every child and giving opportunity them the opportunity to become self independent and worth for the society.

5a. Please describe which future-oriented skills your organization is focused on fostering and how you have measured / plan to measure progress

The future oriented skill that we are focusing on,is, performing art and culture. We focus on training of children in Classical carnatic music, Bharatnatyam, Flute, Harmonium, Tabla, Violin, Keyboard, Guitar with special focus on Mathematics, Brain Development and Yoga. The children are trained through live interactive classes that allows two-way communication of children and teachers. Also, workshops are conducted in schools of most remote areas, where the teacher personally meets children and equips them with skills of performing arts, career guidance tips and with knowledge of culture.

7. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

None of the organization is working in the field of art and culture and that too digitally. Our approach to reach out to beneficiaries is unique in its own ways. Unlike other e-learning platforms, we allow two-way communication between children and teachers, we stay in regular contact with our beneficiaries (teachers in schools, school principals, coordinators in schools), we are providing children with skills that would create alternate career pathways, giving children career guidance, reaching out to children living with no or least resources, and providing skill development free of cost.

8. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

The project was started with 100 schools in 2016 and has now reached to 20,000 schools all over the country. We have impacted lives of 2 crore children who were living in the most remote areas with least of resources. Our project has allowed children to think beyond their limits and pursue their dreams. Virsa has provided opportunities of learning performing arts that can be later used generate employment and livelihood for themselves. Children have represented their schools and States in bi-annual competitions being held by Routes 2 Roots. The improvement and growth of children has been seen during the competitions. The awards and certificates being provided will help to grab job opportunities in later stages of life.

9. Financial Sustainability Plan. Can you tell us about you plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

We require funds to add more schools, from different regions, and reach out to more children in shorter period of time. The program will enable children to think out of the box and pursue career in alternate areas. In longer run, it will allow children to gain employment as they will equipped with enough skills and knowledge.

10. Team

Our team has Founders, Executive members, Board of Advisory, Coordinators, Teachers, Technical Staff, Field Staff, Accountant, Chief Operating Officer, Director Resource, Executive Coordinator (CSR), Support staff. We look forward to expand our existing team with increase in teachers, field staff, coordinators and add new members assigning them appropriate roles and responsibilities.
