Date You Started Your Project
Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Start-Up (first few activities have happened)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
We are focusing on the lack of accessibility to eco-products/lifestyle. This problem is determined by the number of obstacles preventing people from having access to eco-lifestyle such as financial difficulties, lack of awareness, and so on. Lack of accessibility is crucial because the current lifestyles of people lead to an immense amount of waste that profoundly impacts the environment.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We created Ecodo, an app that opens up the accessibility of eco-friendly products to everyone. In turn, it decreases the amount of wasteful packaging, and instead, encourage consumers to invest in better quality and more sustainable products. Our application plans to achieve this with a points system, which allows consumers to earn money every time they purchase eco-products. Through this system, consumers are able to use their points to get free eco-products or instead of delivery fees to make this lifestyle more accessible.
Aside from the points system, Ecodo offers a carbon footprint tracker where you can see the carbon footprint (the amount of carbon dioxide emitted due to consumption of fossil fuels) of each product. This adds another factor to consider before purchasing a product.
Ecodo's target is sustainability-minded people. To be more specific our target market is the 16-28 age range since gen-z and millennials are the most sustainability-minded generations yet, who are open to supporting green companies that are transparent in their actions.
3. Please tell us how you are using science, technology, engineering or math to address your environmental challenge.
Technology and science are both addressed because our solution is to create a mobile application, which is the most efficient way to connect individuals to one database. Additionally, the problem we are addressing is climate change, and how an eco-lifestyle (if made more accessible) would help decrease plastic consumption and waste.
4. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
We realized that not many people know how the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat are affected by our simple everyday actions. By being aware of our actions, we can help reduce the increasing number of children who are born with chronic illnesses even before they greet their parents and people with advanced lung cancer due to heavy pollution all around the world, specifically in Mongolia. The memory of having to wear a mask to properly breathe in a cold, gray morning of Ulaanbaatar on a school day is still stuck in my (Eni) mind. I have the option to disregard my passion project I'm no longer in Mongolia, however, choosing not to pursue it takes away other people's opportunity to try this application and make a change in their lifestyles. That's why I decided to rake a leap and start Ecodo.
5. Video (Keep it simple, your phone on selfie-mode is great): Please upload a 1-minute video to YouTube that answers the following “I am stepping up to be a Changemaker because...”
6. Please highlight the key activities you have carried out to bring your project to life.
Enrolling in Dual School's Social Change Late Cohort was the highlight of Ecodo's journey. The Cohort guided me through every step from design thinking to the prototype process. In order to build this project, having an in-depth understanding of the root of the problem was key and this was by far the hardest first step. From here, I interviewed around 30 people with complete access to eco-lifestyle but don't contribute and people with little to no access but wish to contribute more to it.
7. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
There aren’t apps connecting eco-friendly businesses to consumers to promote eco-lifestyles. With Ecodo, companies that have less of a carbon footprint can use the app to showcase products as Ecodo shows products' carbon footprint. Also, Ecodo is going to incentivize living an eco-lifestyle through a rewards system that will offer consumers points when they make purchases in eco-friendly stores. 70% of global citizens would pay for eco-friendly brands, so consumers will gladly take up an offer of easily being able to maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle while gaining rewards in the process.
8. Impact: In the last three months, please detail the impact your project has made.
Although this project is at the idea-stage, from the moment I presented my project back to the people I interviewed before, I received much positive feedback. Those who said they wouldn't contribute to an eco-lifestyle because they weren't "interested", said they would definitely use this application after seeing the features of Ecodo. For some, it was the information section, for others, it was the carbon footprint tracker section, but for most people, the point system with the additional delivery feature was the highlight. We can measure the impact of these features by the number of people buying from eco small businesses promoted by Ecodo. Also, the number of people who are choosing more eco products with the help of carbon footprint tracker will help us track our impact.
9. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Our next step is to actually begin working with a programmer to create a functional app, making this a very real way to promote eco-lifestyles. This step would be the hardest as it requires a certain skill set, but nonetheless, it is achievable. Once the app is running, we would then begin reaching out to small businesses to begin partnerships and promotions with them, allowing consumers to begin buying products from our store and affiliated stores.
10. Please share how you have influenced other young people to get involved in your project and/or care about environmental sustainability.
We began to ask around whether people actually cared about environmental sustainability and those who didn’t were persuaded to actually learn more if our app contained an information section, which we added in. In this section, daily climate change and environmental facts are included. This section has significantly helped to persuade people to acknowledge Ecodo, and the information would further help persuade people about how switching to an eco-lifestyle would impact the environment.
11. How would you partner with other changemakers to make a difference?
Because our main goal is to maximize accessibility, this will also include partnerships with small businesses that sell eco-friendly products. Through these partnerships, small businesses would gain a form of advertisement because our mobile application will promote products from these stores, and it will increase our profits through paid sponsorships.
12. How would you engage others who have never heard about your project to get their buy-in?
The lifestyle of many individuals is contributing to climate change. 77% of people when asked about sustainable lifestyle answered that they would like to learn more. Ecodo educates consumers about environmental impacts and what their shopping does to the world through carbon footprint tracking feature. Money is a huge incentive to do anything, so our points system that awards consumers with points (which equates to money) every time they purchase eco-products would encourage other people.
14. Which of the following types of expertise would be most useful for you? You’ll be able to select only one option.
Are you employed, or directly related (grand-parents, parents, sibling) to a GM or Ashoka employee?
How did you hear about this challenge?
