We actually run a business (Qilin) and a non-profit organisation (Reverence) This last one does not have social media yet and Qilin has several but we are operating a transition at present (therapy is now handled by Reverence and Eduction Through Horse is handled by Qilin. Qilin is about to become a business.

What is your current yearly budget for the initiative? If you are an idea stage, what early budget you would need to kick-off and run operations in your first year?
nonprofit/NGO: an organisation that uses its resources to achieve a purpose outside of creating profit
educational institution: an organisation dedicated to teaching and learning, including primary, secondary, tertiary institutions, and vocational schools

1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this project to succeed.
A group of friends who definitly want to share the new eye we have on horses and their role within our society. Horses (and dogs as well) give us so much, are so much helpful to us, on a daily basis, that we found they can help us to help other people : sick people, young kids, elder people, disabled people, but also any person whose desire is to feel better, to know better who he is. We and our animals have a strong educational role, especially with teenagers who does not know exactly know what can be very important in their life and what could be secondary. We and our animals can change priorities. Our chore values are respect, mutual aid, integrity.
2. The problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
Our society tends to be more and more individualistic and we forget about nature, animals, other persons, even our close neighbour. This is a question of education and awareness. Horses teach us so much about helping others, being happy to help, taking care, being aware of who we are and what we can do for others. Before it is too late we want to contribute to solve this individualistic point of vue.
3. Your solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
The horse is our emotional miror. He shows us our emotional condition at this sharp moment. The therapist job is to be able to read how the horse behaves according to the patient's behaviour.
Having access to our emotions gives us information about who we are : our capacities (often unknown or hidden) our strengths, but also our weaknesses, and our needs. There is no judgement with animals, specially horses, so that we feel confident with them. It does not matter if they see our interiority, and we feel it very quicky. Horses open a new window towards other individuals and, towards nature which are sources of knowledge. Then, communication, open-mindness, initiatives are possible.
On the other hand, taking care of a horse is very important for sick persons, disabled persons, young or elder people who are used to be cared of most of the time. When a person is happy with a relation built with a horse her/his capacities are strongly increased. This is a very good starting point of our approach. Such a big animal who needs so much being cared of. We can meditate this point.
4. Innovation: How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solve the problem?
Our approach is unique because we all come from different professionnel fields, different backgrounds different origins, and we all work as a team. Our team is currently composed by 2 equitherapists, 2 nurses, 1 horse-riding teacher and one French teacher - equicien (myself), plus other people involved into the business development and management.
We share our practice methods, we are rich of expériences. We work on the equitherapy field as well as educational field. We break the walls between the handicap and the valid worlds.
5. How does your project harness the pet-human bond to help people develop important social competencies (For example: emotional intelligence, collaboration, empathy, resilience, inclusivity) and overcome serious societal issues (for example: violence, abuse, trauma, isolation, abandonment)?
The horse (or the dog when we work with a dog) is the center of our approach. Since he is at the center of our approach, we have a strong respect for him. Our horse is compulsory in our way of working as an animal. Since the horse has a very strong emotionnal intelligence we respect this integrity because we need this integrity. This is because a horse is free to react (in a very quick and very intensive way sometimes) we can read his reaction. Roughly, the way he reacts tells us about the patient emotional conditions.
6. Impact: how has your project made a difference so far in terms of both business outputs and social impact? How do you plan on measuring progress?
When we start Qilin as a non profit organisation in 2016, our 1st realised turnover over 11 months was 7K€. In 2019, our turnover is over 70K€. Qilin is about to be split in a profit organisation (QilinEduc) and a new non-profit organisation called Révérence, who was born in March 2019.
7. Growth strategies: what are your main strategies for scaling your impact?
Internet, social media, international markets.
8. Creating shared value: How does your initiative create value for different stakeholders?
Our professionals get paid for their practice, we rent horses and maneges to the equestrian center. The future QilinEduc will create value.
9. Financial sustainability plan: can you tell us about your plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?
Our business is ready for the next 3 years (approved by our accounting expert)
10. Team: what is the current composition of your team (types of roles, qualifications, full-time vs. part-time, board members, etc.), and how do you plan to evolve the team’s composition as the project grows?
We currently work with free lance equitherapist, nurses and teachers. We have the plan to hire new management people to keep on developp the activity over the next 3 years.
11. How do you plan to influence your field of work if you are a winner of this edition of the Purina BetterwithPets Prize?
We need to buy a truck to go to jails with our horses and dogs, to old people résidences, to disabled people résidences to spread over our region with our well being methods.
