1. Founding story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this project to succeed.

The Seconde Chance project was born in 2007 from the fact that adoption is not a reflex in France and that animal protection associations have not been able to take advantage of the Internet boom to develop their visibility. The idea was to create a unique platform where all animal protection associations could present their animals and all individuals could find their future companion thanks to a multi-criteria search. This works very well but does not completely solve the cases of involuntary abandonment: hospitalized people who want to entrust their animal on a short term basis and people placed in retirement homes.

2. The problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

This site, which now attracts 600,000 visitors per month and 1500 shelters in France, could make it possible to find a solution for people in hospital or in retirement homes to entrust their pet to a trusted person and to have news or see it while paying for food or veterinary expenses. For retirement homes, an additional service would help the retirement home to accept the animal.

3. Your solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

For the search of host families for hospitalizations it is already to promote this need and to put in relation asking and offering more a local association which will be able to help in case of problem.

4. Innovation: How are you innovating or using unique approaches to solve the problem?

To solve this problem we plan to launch an awareness campaign to recruit volunteers and to create a specific section on the site that presents the animals to be housed for a short or long period of time. For this to work we need a large network and credibility, which we have with our database of members created more than 10 years ago, our network of member shelters and our 600,000 visitors per month.

5. How does your project harness the pet-human bond to help people develop important social competencies (For example: emotional intelligence, collaboration, empathy, resilience, inclusivity) and overcome serious societal issues (for example: violence, abuse, trauma, isolation, abandonment)?

Sick people need emotional support. Having to abandon their pet or give it to someone they don't know is a stress and distress that affects their recovery. By having them kept close to home by people who are aware of the situation, some may even see them from time to time.

6. Impact: how has your project made a difference so far in terms of both business outputs and social impact? How do you plan on measuring progress?

It is important for an old person or a person suffering from an illness, such as cancer, to be able to keep an animal close to them, but they can only do so if they are assured of a solution in the event of hospitalisation or even death. Our service would make it possible to ensure this temporary care service or even permanent adoption with the standards of the animal protection to select the foster families.

7. Growth strategies: what are your main strategies for scaling your impact?

We are counting on the organic growth of the site and will run specific campaigns on this new service with the media and all our partners and hospitals and retirement homes.

8. Creating shared value: How does your initiative create value for different stakeholders?

In our societies where there are more and more people of increasing ages and periods of hospitalization, the number of animals that find themselves abandoned for these reasons is growing rapidly. People already have their disease to manage and they have to find a solution quickly, at the risk of being abused by malicious people or having to euthanize or abandon their animal.

9. Financial sustainability plan: can you tell us about your plan to fund your project and how that plan will be sustainable in the short, medium, and long term?

This project requires IT development. It would also require a full-time person to answer questions and solve any problems. The site will find a main sponsor each year to finance this operation.

10. Team: what is the current composition of your team (types of roles, qualifications, full-time vs. part-time, board members, etc.), and how do you plan to evolve the team’s composition as the project grows?

Currently one person is working part-time and 3 or 4 volunteers take care of running the site.

11. How do you plan to influence your field of work if you are a winner of this edition of the Purina BetterwithPets Prize?

The funding will be used to carry out the computer development and to pay a full-time person to launch the project.
